Thompson ton gives Cornwood edge over Sandford

JACKSON Thompson smashed a match-turning ton as Cornwood beat Sandford by five wickets to stay second in the A Division promotion race.

Cornwood can still catch leaders Brixham, who are only five points clear with four games to go.

The odds on any of the chasing clubs catching Cornwood now seem remote as Budleigh are 29 behind and Bradninch 48 after they were rolled by Brixham.

Sandford posted a respectable but gettable 255 for seven, built around Prince Masvuare (80) and Ryan Glass (55).

Masvuare and Charles Fitzroy (22) put on 22 for the second wicket then Glass joined the Zimbabwean to add another 81 for the third wicket.

Matt Skeemer (3-55) was Cornwood’s leading wicket taker, but at a price.

There were mean spells from Adam Goodliffe – six overs for 11 runs – and Craig James who bowled ten for 28 runs.

Cornwood had 49 overs to make the target – one was lost due to rain – and got over the line with three to spare.

Thompson led the way with 129, which came off 99 deliveries and included nine sixes and eight fours.

A stand of 175 with Ben Warren (58) pointed Cornwood in the right direction.

Some big overs – Tom Williams went for 22 in one- helped the Cornwood cause.

Thompson was third out at 208 – caught at mid-wicket off the top edge by Fitzroy off the bowling of Russell Discombe (2-29).

There was a brief wobble as Cornwood slowed to 223 for five, but skipper Jason Hall (14no) and Craig Harris (24no) ensured there were no more slips.

Defeat leaves Sandford in mid-table, but skipper Jamie Palmer remains confident they can finish higher.

“Jackson Thompson batted superbly and his brutal innings really put Cornwood in the driving seat,” said Palmer.

“I was very happy with how we fought and even during Thompson’s onslaught didn't let our heads drop.

“We pushed really hard to the end and still felt we were in with a chance with 10 overs to go.

“My aim now is to keep performing till the end of the season and finish fifth at worst - hopefully push for fourth - and with the young side we have had this year that will be ok.”
