Venue switch for Sidmouth against Bradninch in Booker Cup

SIDMOUTH and Bradninch will hope it is third time lucky in the Booker Wholesale Devon Cup tomorrow (Sunday).

Two previous attempts to play the game at Sidmouth had to be called off.

Cup holders Sidmouth were released from the first game as they had players on Devon county duty.

And last Sunday’s attempt was washed out by bad weather.

With the Sidmouth Folk Festival in full swing, and the Fortfield being used for car parking, the game has been switched to Bradninch.

Sidmouth skipper Will Murray has been taking a close interest in Bradninch since the draw was made and is expecting a challenge.

“Had Bradninch not started the season so slowly, not helped by having a game called off because of bad weather, I would expect them to be right up at the top of the table,” said Murray.

“We know players like Dan Hardy, Ross Acton and Tim Piper can be dangerous – and they have not been the only ones putting in performances.

“Bradninch are a top A Division side and I am sure they will think they can beat us. It will be a hard game.”

Sidmouth won’t have Charlie Miles or Liam Lewis in the side as Devon have claimed them to play against Dorset at Exmouth.

Veteran batsman Anthony Griffiths is a doubt, but Murray is confident he will play.

Sunday’s winners at Kensham Park will be away to Plymouth in the last four.

Plymouth were due to face Budleigh Salterton this Sunday in another third-attempt game, but that match was decided on the toss of a coin.

“We have a tour planned starting on Sunday as we weren’t expecting two postponements when we booked it,” said Budleigh skipper Joel Murphy.

“The rules say we had to toss a coin – and I called the wrong side.”

Already through to the last four are Cornwood and Barton. Both semi-finals are due to be played on August 9. The final is at Heathcoat on Sunday, August 23.
