Balancing act for Lewdown in fight to dodge drop

LEWDOWN skipper Harry Geering has conflicting priorities to juggle ahead of the home game against Barton.

Lewdown need to find 21 points somewhere to get out of the bottom two before it is too late.

Conversely, the 2nd XI are pushing hard for promotion in B Division West where they are up with Abbotskerswell, Cornwood and Ivybridge chasing the runners-up spot behind champs-elect Torquay.

Geering knows he will lose players in the last month of the season  - he always does – and the dilemma is which side to prioritise and when?

“Looking at the league table now, and with the rugby and football seasons starting soon, it's a must-win game against Barton,” said Geering.

“Lose and we are all but down, win and we bring Barton into a relegation battle.

“Either way it will still be tough with players missing the last few games and the 2nd XI going for promotion to the A Division

“I won't be wanting to weaken them too much towards the end of the season but at the same time it will give me a chance to look at some of the youngsters coming through for next year.

“Our view is simple: we want to stay up and will be fighting to do so.”

Geering said Lewdown had been competitive most weeks, but had missed out on the element of luck that wins tight games.

He added: “If relegated there will be some disappointment, but with a lot of youngsters in the 2nd XI at the moment it will make the gap between teams smaller and a chance to improve as a club while looking for promotion again next year.”

Arnie Searle, Matt Witcher, Harry Williams and Mark Jordan are all unavailable.

Phil Yeo and Tallan Burns are definite replacements with further additions pending due to 2nd XI having a must-win game of their own against Plymouth CS&R.
