THE best Bradninch can hope for in the A Division is a top-three finish after they slipped to a four-wicket defeat by Barton at Cricketfield Road.
Back-to-back defeats by Brixham and now Barton have undone most of the good work done in June and July.
Bradninch won six out of seven starts to go from second bottom to fourth in the table and were looking to mount an assault for promotion.
The 59-point gap between Bradninch (185pts) and second-placed Cornwood (244) means no promotion this year, although they may yet catch Budleigh (216) for third.
Barton have spent most of their season bumping around in mid-table, but have strung together a couple of wins to banish any lingering relegation worries.
Luandre van Wyk top scored for Bradninch with 66 in a respectable total of 221 all out.
The South African all-rounder went in at 101 for four after Charlie Walker (30) and Dan Hardy (32) had seen the shine off the new ball during a stand of 67.
Adam Parker (3-47) got van Wyk out at 209 for nine. The best of the stands he was involved in was one of 55 with veteran Chris Acton (20).
Shaun Needham picked up three for 28 towards the end and was on a hat-trick after removing Mark Ashplant and Will Squire.
Barton started patchily – Needham and Mark Gilmour were in and out by the time 22 came up – but were calmed by a stand of 61 between Scott Bellamy (20) and Steve Lewis (63).
Getting Bellamy out backfired on Bradninch as in came in-form Parker, who promptly asserted himself on the bowling.
Parker slammed 90 not out from 57 balls – eight fours and five sixes – and his stand of 83 with Lewis turned the match Barton’s way.
A three-wicket burst by van Wyk (3-25) saw Barton stumble from 166 for three to 172 for six, but Parker was still there and towed Tom Drake behind him for 15 not out as the last 49 runs were knocked off without mishap.
