Sutton makes big impression on Seaton debut

FENITON lost by 74 runs to visiting Seaton in the derby clash at Ackland Park.

It proved to be a special day for Seaton’s 14-year-old prospect Kersley Sutton as he made his 1^st XI debut, opening the bowling with skipper Ben Morgan.

That all happened after tea and young Sutton played his part in the batting effort, helping Joe Berry add a vital 31 runs for the unbroken 10th wicket as Seaton closed on 205-9.

Bagging maximum batting points had not looked likely as Seaton slipped from 127-4 to 142-8. However, Berry went on to hit an unbeaten 42 from the number ten slot as he and young Sutton saw the side over 200.

Earlier in the Seaton innings Mike Wheeler (37) and Ben Morgan (36) added 76 for the fourth wicket.

The Feniton reply was underpinned by a classy knock of 35 from Mark Kingdom, but Berry, coming on as second change, claimed five wickets to compete a superb all-round shift.

It was young Sutton and Morgan who opened the bowling with Sutton’s first six overs in 1st XI cricket going for just 25. He gave way to Robbie Prior who then sent down a fabulous spell of nine overs that saw him return the excellent figures of 2-14.

A delighted Morgan said: “We played well in all areas and I am delighted that we have now been able to give young Kersley (Sutton) his first experience of first eleven cricket.

"He was understandably nervous to start, but quickly found a good rhythm and, whilst he did not get that coveted debut wicket he did not go for many runs and he found the edge on a number of occasions.
"It was all very promising from the lad. He also did his bit with the bat and we have more youngsters like that at the club. "The future is extremely bright for Seaton CC given the development of these kids.”

Morgan continued: “That 10th wicket partnership was the match winner, but I also think the spell from Robbie Prior was also instrumental in us bagging the win. All in all it was a good day at the office.”

Three games to go with two of them at home and Morgan says: “We are looking to win all three and will also look to bring more of the club youngsters in to give them a taste of 1st XI cricket.

“I know our season is over in terms of battling for promotion or avoiding relegation, but that does not mean we are not going to try and win these final games. I am looking for us now to finish the season strongly and set down a marker for next season.”
