SHOBROOKE Park appear to have left it too late to feature in the promotion shake-up following a 22 run defeat against lowly Axminster.
For with two games to go, starting at home to South Devon this Saturday, they trail second-placed Plymstock by 32 points and can only wonder what might have been without a four-match losing run.
Hopes were high in the Shobrooke camp after skipper Chris Simpson (4-15) and Andrew Codling (2-22) bowled out Axminster for 98.
Gary Larcombe (35) and Sam Farrow put in 22, Paul Miller and Larcombe made 20 and with Brad Cross making 19 a running total of 92 for six was reached.
The last four wickets went for six runs.
Shobrooke made inroads though Dylan Blignaut (23) and Andrew Codling (17) but were losing wickets to Matt Pile (3-33).
The turning point was the demise of veteran left-hander Richard Pyle at 69 for six.
Nick Taylor (5-2) mowed down the tail-enders as Shobrooke collapsed to 76 all out.
For Axminster it was a valuable win on the road to survival.
Four more points will take them ahead of South Devon and out of the bottom three.
