Budleigh keep winning but promotion hopes are fading

CEPHAS Zhuwao belted a rapid 95 not out as Budleigh Salterton eased to a six-wicket win at Bideford.

Budleigh’s promotion hopes are fading fast even though they have won four on the trot and are third behind second-placed Cornwood.

The maths of the situation are Budleigh trail Cornwood by 27 points with 40 up for grabs.

If Cornwood beat Bradninch this Saturday, nothing Budleigh can do against Sandford or Lewdown in their last two games will be enough.

Opener Josh Roach top scored for Bideford with 68 in a total of 180 all out.

Bideford reached 77 for three almost entirely thanks to Roach, who had made 58 of them.

Joel Murphy (2-51) removed Roach at 110 for four, but Paul Heard (17), Matt Shepherd (19) and James Atkinson (20) all kept going for a while.

James Leat (3-39) sorted out the stragglers as the last for wickets went for 11 runs – the final three all on 180.

Budleigh were 18 for two in the third over with Eliot Rice and Andy Procter both gonners to Heard (2-27).

Ben Phillips (40) and Zhuwao put on 89 in 15 overs and from then on there was only going to one outcome.

Phillips and Harry Collison went at 107 and 124 respectively, but Ben Carter with 24 not out was there at the end with Zhuwao.
