EXMOUTH sent a scratch side to Plymouth and very nearly got away with it!
Exmouth, whose attention is firmly on the ECB Clubs T20 finals in Cardiff in eight days time, took a mixed side of 1st, 2nd and 3rd XI players to Mount Wise who was bowled out for 127.
Plymouth were coasting at 104 for one, a little edgy at 120 for seven and relieved to get over the line at 128 for eight.
Gary Chappell top scored for Exmouth with 40 off 66 balls – a restrained performance by a batter who likes to get going.
Chappell’s demise to Hal Kerton was the start of where it all started to go wrong for Exmouth.
Joe Hagan-Burt nipped out dangerman Bob Dawson for 18, the Henry Bennett and Kerton got into the middle and lower order.
Only Marquis Clarke (10) reached double figures once the slide started with Bennett taking four for 17, Kerton three for 16 and Hagan-Burt two for 18.
James Toms (62) and Mike Simmers (28) got Plymouth away to an 88-run start and that looked like job done.
Pollard had other plans though and sent back Simmers, Ramsden. George Stephenson then Toms on his way to a season’s best five-for-34 haul.
Chappell (2-28) got in on the act as Plymouth struggled for the last few runs.
They got there in bits and pieces with the two Bennett’s – Rob and Harry – the not-out batsmen at the end.
Skipper Chappell said the gaps in the side showed when Exmouth were batting.
“We got a good start but were missing a few players which showed as we collapsed from 85-2 to 125 all out.
“James Toms batted really well and they were cruising before they started what would have been the biggest collapse of all time and nearly lost it.
“Alvin Pollard bowled really well.”
