Shaldon come a cropper in final game

SHALDON’S luck deserted them in the last game of the season when they lost to Filleigh and were consigned to relegation.

It was a win-at-all-costs game for both sides as the winner would stay up and the losers go down.

Shaldon had been banking on a win over Filleigh as their lifeline as the north Devon side had been below them since week nine of the 18-week season.

Filleigh had won their last two games on arrival at Hazeldown and were in form. Not so Shaldon who had only won three since the halfway stage.

Filleigh posted 210 for seven in their 45 overs – Dom Ford cracking a top score of 73.

After opener and captain Mark Prideaux went in the second over for a duck, Ryan Bowden (66) and Ford (73) put on 137 for the second wicket.

Ford was fourth out at 161, but in the time left Vic Lothian chipped in 24 not out.

Todd Ballman (3-35) was the only Shaldon bowler to take more than one wicket, although Carl Woolnough and Mark Couch both bowled at four a over.

Shaldon struggled to get going against John Hickman and lost opener George Thomas in the fourth over to Lothian.

Karl Blackburn made 26 of the first 44 on the board, but after he went runs were hard to come by.

Ballman made 24 and best of the rest was tail-ender Jamie Day (21) in a total of 125 all out.

There were three wickets each for Gary Henry (3-16), the former Ipplepen bowler, and Mike Prideaux (3-25).
