Cooke and Gingell missing for Sidmouth

SIDMOUTH face Exeter on the Fortfield in their last game as Premier champions before handing the title to Torquay.

Long-time leaders Torquay beat Bovey Tracey last Saturday to make it mathematically impossible for second-placed Sidmouth to catch them.

Sidmouth won’t be at full strength against Exeter as opener Matt Cooke and lower-order batsman Nick Gingell are at a wedding.

Keeper-batter Pete Randerson should be back for what is expected to be his final game for the club.

Randerson arrived at Sidmouth three years ago from Heathcoat as replacement for Mark Jenkins behind the stumps.

Sidmouth now have Dan Powell as a keeping option, as well as Matt Hewer, so have become a bit top heavy for keepers – especially as Jenkins has been helping out in the seconds from time to time.

It’s not official yet, but Randerson is expected to return to Heathcoat for 2016.

“I have not been told officially, but as Peter has bought a house in Tiverton it would seem pretty likely,” said Sidmouth skipper Will Murray.

Powell also returns to the match-day squad having dropped out last Saturday due to rugby commitments.

Murray has a difficult task selecting his side as the second team are involved in a fight with Exeter for the Premier 2nd XI title.

Sidmouth are 12 points clear of Exeter at the top of the table and need a win to be sure of the crown, although a narrow defeat in a high-scoring game may be enough on bonus points.

“We will pick the strongest first team we can, then populate the 2nd and 3rd XIs,” said Murray.

Exeter, winners at Heathcoat last time out, hope to have Zac Bess back against his former club.

Bess was rested last Saturday having played in a three-day game for Devon and a rugby match against Honiton on Thursday night.

If results go Exeter’s way they could finish fourth, which is quite a turnaround from the halfway stage when they were one off the bottom. Five wins in eight games propelled Exeter up the table.

For Exeter to finish fourth they need Exmouth to beat Bovey Tracey, but not too well.

Exeter need three more points than Exmouth to finish fourth, unless Bovey win.
