A DAVE Manning century in a 147-run win over Barton at the Ring wasn’t enough to save Tavistock from dropping straight back into the B Division.
Tavvy went into the final round of fixtures needing a win over Barton and for near neighbours Lewdown to slip up against Budleigh Salterton.
Tavvy kept their side of the bargain – they made 266 for nine the dismissed ten-man Barton for 119 – but Lewdown won too.
Shaun Daymond, the Tavistock captain, said in a competitive division his side were not quite strong enough.
“We won seven games in the end which, in any other season, would be good enough to stay up,” said Daymond.
“It shows how tight the division was this season.
“We didn't pick up enough points when we lost games, being bowled out four times for less than a 100 shows on your points.
“But we have played some good cricket this season. It's a shame to go down but we will be back next year.”
Manning was the lynchpin the rest batted around as he made 129 off 120 balls with 15 fours and three sixes.
Daymond hit 58 as the junior partner in a stand of 123 with the hard-hitting left-hander,
Jay Stevens (13) shared a stand of exactly 50 with Manning for the fourth wicket.
Tom Drake was the pick of the Barton bowlers with three for 21.
Barton, who drafted in 2nd XI captain Jim Parker to get them up to 10, were bowled out in the 37th over.
There were bits and pieces in the top five from Mark Gilmour (24), Drake (32) and Adam Parker, but nothing substantial like Manning and Daymond.
When Barton did threaten to build a partnership, Daymond (3-24) was around to strangle it.
Once former Devon keeper-batter Andy Hele was sixth out at 106, Barton lost their last three wickets for 13 runs.
