Bradninch president Roy Nott presents the Bails' Bash trophy to winning captain Dan Hardy
HOST club Bradninch triumphed in the inaugural Bails’ Bash tournament held at their Kensham Park home.
The competition was staged in honour of former player Simon Bailey (pictured), who is confined to a hospital bed in Yorkshire due to a degenerative illness.
Bailey joined the club in 1982 and played for more than 30 years before his illness prompted a switch to umpiring.
Will Birley, who skippers the club’s under-17 team came up with the idea of a six-a-side competition run along similar lines to the Hong Kongixes.
Five teams took part in the five-overs-per-side with everyone but the wicketkeeper bowling a single over.
Amongst the teams competing was one skippered by Bradninch’s Luke Wrightson and containing work-mates from Gregory’s in Cullompton.
The team included a number of first-time cricketers, but the format suited them and there were some impressive performances throughout the day long action.
The final was contested between a team led by Gary Chappell, the former Bradninch skipper now captain at Exmouth, and current Bradninch captain Dan Hardy.
Hardy’s men were triumphant and he collected the Bails’Bash trophy from Bradninch president Roy Nott.
A collection was made and vice-president Paul Nott will be taking it with him when he goes to visit Bailey in hospital next month.
