BUDLEIGH Salterton fast bowler Joe Gore will continue his cricket education during the winter at the Somerset Academy.
The 6ft 4ins paceman was talent spotted last year by Somerset, who invited him to join their emerging player programme.
Somerset liked what they saw of Gore to play him in their U17 side during the season just ended – and also in two Second Eleven County Championship games.
Budleigh didn’t see too much of the former Exmouth Community College student last year as he was playing plenty of cricket elsewhere.
Neil Rice, the Budleigh chairman, said the club probably won’t see too much of Gore next year either.
“Arul Suppiah, who is in charge of cricket at Queens in Taunton, saw Joe in action and the end result was a scholarship to the college,” said Rice.
“Joe’s first priority will be Queens matches on Saturdays until the summer term finishes and we may see a bit of him from early July onwards.
“We are all really pleased for Joe as he has a fantastic attitude towards his cricket and the potential to go far in the game.”
Gore was part of the Devon youth system at U12 and U13 level.
He is the second Devon youngster to win a place on the Somerset Academy this winter.
Exeter’s Tom Lammonby, who was batsman of the tournament at this year’s Bunbury Festival, has also won a place.
