EXETER’S Tom Lammonby went home with the top prize at the Devon Cricket Awards night held at Sandy Park.
Lammonby, who was 15 in June, won the Buller Bowl, which is awarded annually to the youth cricketer of the year.
The bowl was handed over (left) by Hampshire all-rounder Ryan Stevenson, who started the season as a newcomer to the Devon team and ended it playing First Class cricket.
Lammonby had a fantastic year for Devon, which was highlighted by Devon’s youth chairman Jim Parker in his presentation speech.
“Two tons in South Africa on the Development XI tour in February, three for Devon U15s in eight games, Bunbury Festival batsman of the tournament and now a place at the Somerset Academy,” said Parker.
“The award this year goes to a young an who has had sensational year and has a very, very bright future ahead of him.”
Lammonby totalled 483 runs at an average of nearly 70 during the ECB U15 Championship season for Devon, on top of the 394 at an average of 66 scored in South Africa,
He was part of a Devon double at the Bunbury Festival, the traditional shop window for aspiring First Class cricketers. Lammonby’s 80-plus average won the batting award; the bowling prize went to county colleague Kazi Szymanski.
It is the third year running an Exeter player has won the award, The winner in 2013 and 2014 was Ben Green, who graduated into the England U19 side this season.
More than 300 young cricketers of both sexes, parents, coaches and well-wishers packed into the function suite at Sandy Park for the presentations.
The annual event used to be the Devon Youth Cricket Awards ceremony, but was extended this season to include the senior men’s and women’s teams as well.
Although Devon CCC had a dreadful season in the Minor Counties Championship – they finished bottom without a win to their name – there were some success stories.
The most notable was that of Exeter all-rounder Zak Bess, who topped the bowling averages with 18 wickets at 25.27 in his first full season in the team. Bess is pictured (right) collecting his award from Stevenson.
The young Lion of the year went to Exeter-based batsman Reid Mawdsley, who played for Ilminster in the West of England Premier League last season.
Mawdsley is currently playing cricket in Australia and the award was collected on his behalf by his mother.
