Gregory going 'Down Under' for more rehab

By RICHARD WALSH

SOMERSET all-rounder Lewis Gregory plans to continue his rehabilitation following a back injury by playing Grade cricket in Western Australia.

Gregory was scheduled to take part in an ECB spin and batting camp in early November, after which he had been selected to play for England Lions in their twenty20 series against Pakistan A.

The 23-year-old from Devon had to withdraw from both trips when a scan at the end of the season showed he had a back problem.

The former Plympton CC youngster was considering going out to Perth after Christmas even before the ECB programmes were announced and now his back is recovering that is where he is heading.

'I will be going Perth and playing Grade cricket for Subiaco Floreat and follow the same training programme Tom Abell and Jack Leach are on during the week, where I will be hitting lots of balls and working on my batting," said Gregory, who jets out to Perth on February 28.

'My batting wasn't up to scratch last summer so the chance to go out to Western Australia and play some club cricket and do some training out there came along and I was delighted to take it.

'Stuart Walters is running the camp in Perth and in addition to Tom and Jack there are a few other young county players.

'It will be really nice to go out there and working outside again will be very welcome.'

Walters, the former Surrey and Glamorgan batsman, now runs a coaching academy in Western Australia.

Talking about the latest news on his injury Gregory said:  'Thankfully things are coming on well and my back feels good.

'I am doing a lot of rehab work with Jamie Thorpe and although it's a bit tedious at times I know it is coming on well and the body is feeling good at the moment.'

Regarding his bowling Gregory said: 'I bowled a lot of overs last season, but if you want to take wickets you have to bowl the overs.

'There are still a few little things I will look to tweak with my action which I will be working on when I am away, and that will hopefully put less stress on my body when I do bowl."
