Win over Bradninch step in right direction for Sandford

SANDFORD skipper Jamie Palmer claimed there is still plenty of room for improvement despite enjoying a 21-run win over local rivals Bradninch.
Any sort of win was going to be an improvement after the 94-run drubbing by Lewdown seven days earlier.
Russell Discombe scored exactly 50 in Sandford’s total of 153 all out – Charlie Walker taking five wickets for Bradninch.
Bradninch were all out for 132 in reply, which represented a terrible collapse after they had been 67 for two.
Ryan Glass (3-19) had a lot to do with the collapse, as did new boy Charlie Fitzory (2-36).
Palmer said Sandford did a lot of things much better, but there remain question marks over their batting.
“It was pleasing to get a big win under our belts, especially after last week's performance,” said Palmer.
“We set the game up well at about 100 for three after 30 overs and I felt we should have posted 200 minimum which would have probably been par.
“Once again we gifted far too many wickets to the opposition and we were disappointed to only make 153.
“We said before the game we needed better aggression and intensity on the field and we showed all of that in bowling them out for 132.
“Charles Fitzroy was very good on debut and Glassy again picked up key wickets in the middle overs.
“Josh Cann batted well at the end for Bradninch and made us work for the final wicket. But overall it's a good result against a good side.”
Palmer had a point about Sandford’s batting as they were 125 for three when Bradninch broke a third-wicket stand of 54 between Discombe and Richard Tucker (20).
Adrian Small made 23 having shared a stand of 38 with Discombe which took him past 9,000 Devon League runs in his career.
Walker (5-16) did the damage as Sandford lost seven wicket for 28 runs.
Skipper Dan Hardy (22) and Mark Ashplant (25) had early runs for Bradninch before it all went wrong.
A running total of 67 for two became 99 for nine as Glass (3-19), Prince Maseaure (2-32) and former Chagford youngster Fitzroy (2-36) got to work.
Josh Cann (20) and last man Paul Nott delayed the inevitable by putting on 33, although the game had gone by then.
Bradninch skipper Hardy said the game had started well for his side before they went off the rails.
“I think we did well to bowl them out for 153 as they looked like they could score 200-plus at one point. Then Charlie Walker took five quick ones.
“In the chase we got off to a good start, then lost seven wickets for 22 runs.
“In hindsight we dropped Russell Discombe three times on his way to 50.
“Overall really disappointing but this week is a new week.”
Sandford are away to Cornwood this Saturday. Bradninch are back a Kensham Park where Brixham are the visitors.
