Tavistock triumph in derby clash

SKIPPER Shaun Daymond played a man-of-the-match role in Tavistock’s one-wicket win over Hatherleigh.

You can’t get any closer than winning by one wicket – especially as there were only three balls left when Daymond stroked the winning runs.

Victory lifts Tavistock away from the bottom of the table and within nine points of Budleigh Salterton, who are the side they have to catch to get out of the bottom two.

Gareth Tidball top scored for Hatherleigh with 54 and shared in a stand of 118 with Chris Jelley that formed the bulk of a total of 164 all out.

Daymond did is bit with the ball by taking four for 16 while South African Jay Stevens had four more for 25 runs.

Dave Manning made early runs for Tavistock and partnered Daymond in a stand of 57 for the second wicket.

Jelley (3-27) and Rob Fisheigh (3-26) made Tavvy work for their runs, as did Andy Collier (2-26).

A sixth-wicket stand of 39 between Daymond and Josh Stephens (16) narrowed the gap further.

Tavvy got down to the final over from Rob Collier with Daymond unbeaten on 69 and last man Lee Baker at the other end.

Daymond took a couple of twos then a single to win the game with three balls to spare and finish on 74 not out.

“It was a great team effort, not just me,” said Daymond afterwards.

“After last week’s disaster at Bradninch we sat down in the week, regrouped as a team and came back stronger.”
