Newman on top form as Budleigh climb table

BUDLEIGH Salterton take on Tavistock this Saturday looking to climb further up the A Division table.

Back-to-back wins over Barton and now Hatherleigh have hoisted Budleigh to fifth in the rankings.

The upturn in fortunes has coincided with the arrival of Zimbabwean Cephas Zhuwao, the hard-hitting left-hander with an appetite for runs.

Zhuwao made 88 on his debut against Barton and was at it again at Hatherleigh, slamming 56 off 43 balls with six fours and four sixes in a total of 236 all out.

Skipper Lloyd White missed out – he came and went for nothing – but a 52-run stand between Eliot Rice (26) and Rob Craze (32) got Budleigh going.

Craze and Rice fell to Rob Fisheleigh and Mark Lake (3-59) in consecutive overs, which exposed Hatherleigh to Zhuwao for the first time

Sixty-three went up in 11 overs while Zhuwao  and Sam Richardson (8) were together.

Zhuwao lasted four balls longer, which brought Rob Newman out to join Harry Parkin.

Newman, the former Devon all-rounder back with Budleigh after nine years away from the area, put bat to ball impressively.

His 68 came off 48 balls and included nine fours and three sixes.

Along the way there was a stand of 52 with Parkin – he got the two! – and another of 21 at the death with Joel Murphy (20no).

Lake had the  most wickets; Chris Jelley and Carl Scwarz bagged two each.

Hatherleigh were all out for 150 with nine overs to go.

Double-figure scores were thin on the ground with Andy Bennett (33), Schwarz (43no) and Rhys Davies (11) the only takers.

Budleigh won the game in the time it took Hatherleigh to slump from 95 for four. when Bennett got out, to 115 for seven.

Craze spun out three for 37 and there were two wickets for Murphy.

Skipper White said the difference between the sides was Newman and Zhuwao.

He added: “When Robbie plays, it gives us the balance we so desperately need.

“Having 60 overs of top bowling to pick from is a captain’s delight.

“Joel was absolutely superb with the new ball - his new role at Budleigh - rolling back the years.

“We are starting to see some really positive cricket played.

“However, every one of us have areas to improve upon and we will continue to work hard in the coming weeks to ensure we only get better.”

Hatherleigh skipper Lake said: “All credit to Budleigh, they out played us with bat and ball.

“They set a good total and we were in the game at 95 for three, but they tied us down with good spin options and it was hard to score.

“We need to learn to apply ourselves with the bat more and use all 50 overs.

“It's hard to win games if you keep getting bowled out.

“I'm sure we will come back stronger from this and hopefully put in a stronger performance this week end.”
