Plymstock win on chase in derby

DOM Wood and skipper Scott Mansfield both hit half centuries as Plymstock eased to a six-wicket win over Ivybridge in the derby date at Filham.

Ivybridge recovered from an unimpressive 81 for seven with 20 overs to go to reach 202 for eight.

Jeewan de Silva , who went in at 23 for two, made a patient 85 off 110 balls but no one stayed with him for long.

Rob Cunningham (2-26) and Nick Lowe (3-41) did the early damage then Ian Whalley (2-26) got into the middle order.

Skipper Gareth Andrews dropped himself down the order and went in a number nine after George Thompson had been dispatched by Whalley.

Andrews stuck around for 75 minutes to make 48 not out as he and De Silva put on 98 for the eighth wicket to give Ivybridge a fighting chance.

Ivybridge needed early wickets to put pressure on Plymstock – and could have done without an opening stand of 62 between Wood and Matt McKay.

Wood went at 75 for two for 48 – the second scalp for Alfie Huxtable (2-37), who rejoined Ivybridge last week after a brief spell with Dartington & Totnes.

Jack Horton came and went for a dozen as Plymstock slowed briefly to 91 for three.

James Nichols (33) and Mansfield with an unbeaten 68 took Plymstock within sight of victory without too many dramas.

Winning skipper Mansfield said it was a good win over a good team. In a great game that could have gone either way.

“Credit to ivybridge who showed how strong they are with Gareth Andrews coming in at nine,” said Mansfield.

“To have them 81for seven around half way and for them to make 202 for eight was disappointing, but both Jeewan and Gareth batted really well.

“Knowing that rain was possible we knew where we needed to be at 20 overs and we started in best way possible with Dom wood dispatching the first four balls of the opening over for four.

“A good spell of bowling from Solomon and Huxtable meant we fell behind the rate at the 20-over point.

“With runs to make up the 95-run partnership between myself and James Nicholls was just what was required.

“When Nichols departed for 33 off 87 to a great one-handed catch from Josh Zimmerman it was all but over.”
