Bovey hand debut to 13-year-old keeper

WHO is the youngest player to appear in the Devon League Premier Division?

That’s the intriguing question thrown up by the selection of 13-year-old Sam Taylor to keep wicket for Bovey Tracey at Heathcoat tomorrow.

Age-related records aren’t something the Devon League has any records of.

There are some candidates – Paignton’s Chris Read, Exeter’s Orlando LeFleming and North Devon’s Mike Garnham come to mind – but until some dusty old scoresheets can be consulted the answer remains a mystery. At 13 years, 322 days, there won't have been many if any younger players

Taylor gets a go behind the stumps as Bovey are without Lewis Hammett and Ben Ayres, both of whom are regular glovesmen.

Peter Bradley, the Bovey captain, has no qualms about having a 13-year-old in the team.

“Sam has been keeping in the 2nd XI and we are without Hammet and Ayres,” said Bradley.

“He is a Devon age-group player and has been keeping to our bowlers at training.

“It will be a great experience for him. He's keen and works very hard.”

Andy Fairbairn returns after maternity leave.

Bovey beat Exeter last Saturday without playing at their best.

Bradley wants an improvement against Heathcoat.

“Looking to concentrate and improve from last week, as a team and individually,” said Bradley.

“A few too many bad balls, misfields and poor shot execution, put pressure back on us after getting in control in the game.”

“That means concentration in all three departments for the whole 100 overs.”
