Ipplepen bounce back from first defeat

LACK of consistency is the big problem for winless Thorverton, who anchored to the foot of the B Division table after a 74-run defeat by Ipplepen.

Thors travel to South Devon this Saturday 29 points adrift at the bottom five games into the season.

Too many more afternoons like the last Saturday will leave Thors struggling to stay in the division.

Dave Baldock, who stood in as captain against Ipplepen for the injured Graham White, said bowling and batting were patchy.

“We have periods in games where we bowl well but seem unable to back it up in the field,” said Baldock.

“Ipplepen’s 270 wasn’t many more than would have been par on Saturday so we were confident of having good go at it.

“Had we batted as we have done for most of the season so far, we probably would have got them.

“But we were 13 for three after ten overs and you won’t chase down 270 from there very often.”

Pens got away to a 117-run start between openers Jack Lewis (49) and Sam deFriend (59) – their second ton-up partnership in four games.

There was a wobble as Pens dipped to 158 for five before the batters got to grips with Thors’ change bowling.

Nick Fairbank (26), debutant Marcus Green (52), and Ash Harvey (28) took control and added 112 in the last 11 overs. Green was brutal on the flagging bowlers, as his runs came from only 25 balls.

Miserley spells from Joe Abbot (0-19) and Paul Thomas (3-26) kept Thors quiet at first.

Baldock (53) and Harry Choules (35) threatened briefly against the spinners but tight bowling created pressure and they were removed by two sharp run-outs from Sam Wakeham and Dave Harris.

Wickets were shared around as Thors declined, although there was some late slogging that brought 25 in the last three overs and a bonus batting point.

“A very impressive and efficient performance that took us back to the top of the table after Chudleigh's defeat to Axminster,” said skipper Keith Wakeham. “But we expect a stiffer test from Plymstock at home this week.”
