Tavvy overwhelmed by Budleigh batters

TAVISTOCK are hovering just above the A Division drop zone after Budleigh Salterton defeated them by 147 runs.
Budleigh made 237 for seven in their 50 overs – opener Rob Craze making a top score of 47.
Tavistock were all out for 90 in reply – Zimbabwean Cephas Zhuwao (4-28) doing much of the damage.
Take out Jamie Stephens 33 coming in at 44 for five and there wasn’t a lot from the rest.
Defeat leaves Tavistock third from bottom with a three-point buffer between them and Bradinch in the second drop spot.
Shaun Daymond, the Tavistock captain, said Budligh bowled well and his side batted badly.
“It was a really poor batting display again,” said Daymond.
“Credit to Budleigh: they are a really good side. But we should not be all out for 90.
“We need to get the basics right and put scores on the board, otherwise we can't compete.
“I was really pleased with the bowling and felt we did well throughout the innings.
“We were missing a keeper again as Dave Manning got injured on Thursday in training, so we did really we in the field to cope with makeshift keepers.”
Craze, who opened up, left Budleigh at 137 for four having been involved in 50-plus stands with Lloyd White (31) and Zhuwao (35)..
Down the order there were runs for Ben Carter (24) and Sam Richardson, who fired seven fours on his way to 41 not out from 31 balls.
The wickets were shared around with Jay Stevens (2-34) the only bowler to take more than one.
Tavvy got bogged down against openers Joe Gore (2-27) and Joel Murphy (0-10), the lost wickets to the spin of Zhuwao and Craze (2-19).
Jamie Stephens (33) and tail-ender Lee Baker (10) put on 30 for the last wicket to delay the inevitable after Tavvy plummeted from 41 for two to 54 for seven and on to 59 for eight.

Lloyd White, the Budeigh captain, felt it was more of a team effort than a case of two or three players dominating the match.

“The fact no one scored 50 shows we all worked hard to get 225 plus together,” he said.

“Sam Richardson's innings was superbly timed and great to watch.

“An opposition player said to me in the week that if Cephas doesn't get runs, then Budleigh don't get runs - well I think we put that one to bed.

“Everyone chipped in and played their part.

“Rob Craze in his final game for the club for the summer was superb.

“It's been a joy to play with him and he's a superb lad. He'll be sorely missed both on and off the field.

“Dan Messom kept extremely well in the absence of Ben Phillips, who is back playing school cricket.”
