North Devon win at a gallop against Exeer

EXETER’S middle order did a vanishing act against North Devon – and it cost them the match.

The County Ground outfit were 58 for one with Zak Bess (27) going well and Rob Holman (18) looking assured,

Tom Allin produced a peach of a delivery that caught Holman’s outside edge on its way through to the keeper.

Bess went in the next over – he guided a Josh King long-hop to Callum French at slip – and the slide was on.

Allin took two for 28, King had four for 28 and Exeter plunged to 93 for nine.

Just when it seemed Exeter were going to be rolled for under a hundred, last pair Pete Hensor and Jon Tipper spared their blushes.

Tipper propped up one end while Hensor got on with it at the other on his way to 55.

Their stand of 61 for the last wicket – Tipper made 11 – at least made the scoreline respectable.

Matt Dart wound things up when he removed Tipper with the score on 154.

Exeter needed early wickets to pose any sort of threat – and seeing North Devon reach 60 for none was the last thing they wanted.

Tipper got French out for 23, but skipper Barney Huxtable (54) and Max Curtis (29no) added another 33 as the target came down.

A 50-run stand between Curtis and Quintin Dreyer (40) left 11 needed, most of which Curtis got.

Ben Green was the only Exeter bowler to go for less than four an over.

Defeat leaves Exeter in the bottom two and the only consolation is that none of the other bottom four sides won either.

Despite their perilous position, skipper Miles Lenygon is staying calm.

“We've just got to stay positive,” said Lenygon.

“We have been in winning positions in most of our games but just lost the key moments.

“We aren't going to panic yet, there are 12 games of cricket to go and we will sort it out.”
