Jay, 13, slams first league century

HAS there ever been a batsman as young as Jay Rothery to make a century in a Devon League game.

That’s the question North Devon CC players and supporters have been asking after the Pilton Community College pupil stroked 114 for the 3rd XI in their win over Kentisbeare 2nd XI at Westleigh.

Mark Ansell, the North Devon CC chairman, had the best view in the house of Jay’s knock as he was at the other end for most of it.

Said Ansell, who made 52 himself: “Jay opened the batting and was out in the last over – it was quite a knock for a young lad.

“We put on 175 for the second wicket and I was lucky enough to be out there with him.

“Everyone at the club is so pleased for Jay as he really is as keen as mustard to practice and play.

“It was the first time he had ever made more than 50 in a match and he got out three balls from the end.

“We are all wondering if anyone younger has every scored a league century? “

For the record, Jay is 13 years and 330 days old.
