Green scores first ton for Somerset 2nd XI

BEN Green was a happy young man after scoring his maiden century for Somerset 2nd XI in their drawn two-day match against Gloucestershire at Taunton Vale on Tuesday, writes Richard Walsh.

Green, who is 17, grew up in the Devon age-group ranks before joining the Academy at the County Ground.

He played for England under-19s on their trip to Australia earlier this year and 2nd XI cricket with Somerset is the next step on his cricketing development.

The young all-rounder who plays for Devon and the Exeter club when he can, said: ‘As you can imagine I was very happy to get my first century for Somerset 2nd XI and I felt very proud to have achieved it.

‘I think I have scored about a dozen centuries before, but this was my first at this level and my first of this season.’

Talking about his innings that lasted more than four hours, Green said: ‘This is one of the longest times that I have spent at the wicket.

‘It was a pretty flat pitch, which helped me, but I had to concentrate pretty hard because I didn’t want to throw it all away.’

During his century Ben shared partnerships with Max Waller, who also made a century and Alfonso Thomas, who was in the middle when the youngster got to his there figures.

‘It was a great help to have people like Max and Alfonso at the other end,’ said Green pictured on the right in the photo above.

‘Whenever I felt a bit shaky, or anything, there was a voice in my ear to settle me down and help me to focus.

‘To be able to play in the same team as people like Alfonso and Abdur Rehman is a great experience for me and helps me to broaden my knowledge of the game.

Green is in the throes of his A-levels at Exeter School and once he gets exams out of the way it will be cricket at the top of the timetable.

‘I have got my last exams shortly, then I will be looking at a summer of cricket which is brilliant,’ he said.

“I will be sharing my time between playing for Devon and Somerset 2nd XI.

‘Later in the summer I hope I am going to be playing for the England under-19s against the Australians over here,’

‘Hopefully, I will be able to keep myself in good nick and score lots of runs and take plenty of wickets.’
