McGillivray leads Brixham run chase

BRIXHAM will go into their game against bottom of the table Bideford a hefty 22 points clear at the top of the A Division table after beating Hatherleigh by seven wickets.

Chasers Cornwood obliged by losing to Tavistock and have gone from first to third in two matches.

Budleigh are now in second place after they beat Bideford last time out by 63 runs in a high-scoring affair at Westward Ho!

Barton remain fourth following their setback against Sandford.

Hatherleigh’s total of 165 for eight looked below par – and Brixham proved the point by knocking off the runs with more than 11 overs to spare.

“It was a good tough game played in very good spirit,” said Brixham captain Andy Pugh.

“We again bowled well and did enough with the bat to secure the points.”

Hatherleigh struggled to make runs at the top of the order as Matt McGillivray and Craig Eaves pinned them down.

In a running total of 61 for four after 27 overs, opener Gareth Tidball’s 20 off 62 balls was as good as it got.

Carl Schwar (48) and Jack Cherrington (19) made some progress with a stand of 61.

Rhys Davies topped up the total with 19 near the end.

Spinner Gary Spencer had three for 43 while Lee Upham claimed two for 22.

Brixham lost opener Josh Hunt, Stuart Edgar (22) and skipper Andy Pugh (26) reaching 73 for three.

An unbroken stand of 93 between McGillivray (79) and Tim Robinson (12) eased Barton to victory.

Hatherleigh skipper Mark Lake tried eight bowlers in search of a breakthrough. None of them took more than one wicket.

“I have no complaints really, we were beat by a better side,” said Lake.

“They were good in everything they did and we didn't perform to our best.”
