Tavistock show potential by beating Cornwood

TAVISTOCK skipper Shaun Daymond believes his side showed their true potential in the six-wicket win over Cornwood.

There were three wickets each for Daymond (3-27) and Jay Stevens (3-26) as Cornwood were bowled out or 129,

Matt Skeemer (38) and Jason Hall (24) shared in the only 50-plus stand put together by Cornwood.

Jackson Thompson made the next best of 23 before he was bowled by James McGahey shaping to play the pull shot.

Tavvy got there on the back of a stand worth exactly a hundred between Ian Gray (64) and Tim Pope (37no) that left four needed to win.

Adan Goodliffe (3-13) was the only Cornwood bowler to pose real problems for Tavistock.

Tavvy have been hit and miss at times since returning to the A Division this term. Daymond hopes beating Cornwood is a signal of future intent.

“Our batting was our strong point last year and paved the way for us to win games,” said Daymond.

“We batted sensibly in difficult conditions on a wet one at our place, realising it was best to stick about. I was pleased for Ian Gray to get some runs as he has had a bit of a quiet run.

“Our bowling was excellent. I believe we have one of the best attacks in this division..”

It was Cornwood’s second defeat in a row and drops them down to third in the table they were leading a fortnight ago. Brixham and Budleigh Salterton have gone past them.

Nick Goodliffe, the chairman of cricket, said Cornwood never really got into gear.

“The game appeared to start poorly with wickets falling regularly and never really got any better,” he said. “Accurate bowling from Tavistock attack never allowed Cornwood to get going.

“The Tavistock batters decided to get after the low target positively and despite a few wobbles, made relatively light of the challenge.

“There will be an element of re-grouping this week in the Cornwood camp.

“Alternative options will certainly be considered, as we bid to get back to winning ways.”
