Abbots and Pens meet for first time in 16 years

ABBOTSKERSWELL will be losing the services of captain Charlie Garrett  after Saturday’s derby at Ipplepen.

Garrett, 23, having wintered in Australia is now living and working in the Cotswolds and the travelling has become an issue.

Paul Mitchell, the Abbots’ chairman, said: “Over the last two seasons Charlie’s commitment to the club has never been less than 100 per cent and he has supported and encouraged our young squad really well.

“Hopefully we’ve not lost him completely and he’ll return occasionally.

“With Charlie’s departure we have invited Mawgan Penrice to be the 1st XI captain for the remainder of this season and, hopefully, into 2016.

“Mawgan has accepted the challenge and he will be fully supported by everyone at the club.

“Mawgan has a  good cricketing brain and will prove a fine replacement.

“We thank Charlie for his time with the Club and the huge contribution he has made.”

Garrett doubled up as senior coach and the club are now on the look-out for a replacement player-coach.

Ipplepen are unchanged for third week but skipper Keith Wakeham said he has ‘guys pushing from 2nd XI for places.’

Pens lost to Ivybridge last Saturday, not that Wakeham is panicking over one it

“One bad result on a poor track doesn't make us a bad team,” said Wakeham.

“We're ready for the first local derby with Abbots for probably 15 or 20 years.”

For the record the last meeting between the sides was August 14, 1999 when both teams were in the B Division.

Abbots were promoted as champions – Damian Carvalho and Mike Pedleyn bowling them to the title with 98 wickets between them – and Ipplepen finished bottom and went down with Plymouth Civil Service.

BACK-to-back defeats by leaders Ipplepen and second-placed South Devon have prompted a shake-up at Plymstock for the visit of Axminster.

Dropping down to the 2nd XI in search of runs is opener Matt Mackey, along with 14-year old opening bowler Robbie Cunningham as he searches for some wickets.

Skipper Scott Mansfield is back after a weekend off and wicket-keeper batsman Jason Williams will regain the gloves to allow Ian Whalley to get back to bowling spin.

“It's been a hard couple of games, but it was more than disappointing by the amount we lost by,” said Mansfield

“Only a few can really hold there heads up with recent performances so this week seems as good as any to try some new things.

“People are struggling at the moment, but a bit of hard work during the week and a bit of luck, I'm confident this will change sooner rather than later.”

SHOBROOKE Park take their four-match winning run to second-placed South Devon quietly confident of making it five.

“If we take our catches and bowl well, with our batting outstanding in the last four games, hopefully we get a bit of luck and come away with the points,” said skipper Chris Simpson.

Andrew Codling is away so Dan Lewis comes in to the middle order.

Simpson has another bowling option with Pete Turner coming back in.

Andrew Steer drops back to the 2nd XI.

South Devon bring in loft seamer Neil Maud for the unavailable Paul Hooper as they seek to consiolidate in second place.

Lsst season it was the bowlers who took South Devon to the top of the C Division for most of the summer.

This year South Devon have become a batting side!

“I doubt any of us have taken 10 wickets yet,” said skipper Jon Martin.

“Instead we seem to have three of four batsmen in form – Sean Day and Neil Hancock especially – and we are winning games.

“It would probably help if our selection was a bit more consistent. Every week we seem to have a different side and that doesn’t help.”

Thorverton are ready to receive Chudleigh this Saturday after beating Braunton by two wickets off the last ball of the game to win for the first time this season.

Injuries are taking a toll on Thorverton and the latest member of the walking wounded is skipper Graham White.

White strained a groin muscle playing for Devon Dumplings on Wednesday afternoon, but intends to play on.

Braunton are going to be without left-armer Jon Baglow for up to six weeks.

Baglow pulled up with a calf strain in the defeat by Thorverton last time out.

Ian Roberts will captain the side in Baglow’s absence at Ivybridge tomorrow.
