C DIVISION EAST
BARNSTAPLE & Pilton are up to fourth in the C Division East table following a crushing eight-wicket win at Shaldon.
Shaldon were all out for 209 in the 41st of their 45 overs – a total Barnstaple & Pilton knocked off with more than seven overs to go on the back of a ton-up stand between Tom Popham and Brady Saunders.
Shaldon went off at a cracking pace with openers Karl Blackburn (58) and George Thomas (45) hoisting 83 for the first wicket.
Todd Ballman (30) and Thomas added another 73 as Shaldon eased to 153 for two.
Saunders (3-32) broke the stand and as the overs ran out wickets tumbled.
Steve Moore and Lee Cole had two each as Shaldon lost their last eight wickets for 42 runs.
Only Dan Woolnough (25) hung around – he was last man out to Lee Cole.
Barnstaple & Pilton made a 37-run start through Shaun Cole (22) and Popham.
Joe Hanna bowled Cole and on 98 Paul Schiller was second out to Woolnough.
Saunders came in to join Popham and their stand of 114 won the match.
Popham was unbeaten on 79 and Saunders 54 not out.
Barnstaple are at home to Clyst Hydon on Saturday.
ALPHINGTON captain Stuart Shaw intends to give leaders Ottery a run for their money for the automatic promotion place in the second half of the season.
Only the champions go up of right this season with the runners-up playing off against their West Division counterparts.
Shaw wants to get Alphington back in the B Division by the direct route and intends narrowing the 27-point gap between first and second as often as possible.
“We have got the players to do it and the depth in the 2nd XI to cover for the looming holiday season,” said Shaw.
“If we win against Kentisbeare this Saturday we will be six and two for the first half of the season. It should be six and one as the only side that deserved to beat us were Ottery.
“Ottery do have a good lead, but if they lose again and we keep winning we are right up there with them.
“We play Ottery three weeks from the end and I want to be in touching distance of them then to make it a promotion decider.”
Ben Newcombe (3-42) and Ashley Green (4-44) bowled Alphington to a seven-run win over Seaton after Green (49no) and Dave Haysom (43) top scored in a batting-first total of 193 for seven.
OTTERY St Mary lost for the first time in the league this season when Feniton turned them over in the derby clash at Salston Field by 23 runs.
Skipper Lewis Townsend was happy to keep Feniton to 210 all out, but less impressed with the side’s batting.
Run-machine Billy Rudolph was missing – he has gone through 500 already this season – but that wasn’t an excuse as far as Townsend was concerned.
“Having done well to get Feniton out for a below-par score, too many of us didn’t turn up to bat,” said Townsend.
“It wasn’t our finest day, but it was bound to happen sometime and we move on against Seaton this week.”
Mark Salter (55) and Graham Tucker and got Feniton away to a 50-run start then Alex Frankpitt (45) and Adam Ramcharran (26) chipped in with a few.
Bowling plaudits went to Jody Clements (3-43) and Matt Reed (3-30).
Ottery were all out for 187 in reply once Alex Thurgate (48no) ran out of partners.
Mark Kingdon (4-37) and Matt Davies (3-28) were the pick of the bowlers.
Ottery are away to Seaton this Saturday. Feniton host Uplyme & Lyme Regis.
CLYST Hydon will be looking to bounce back from a 122-run drubbing in the derby clash with Kentisbeare when the visit Barnstaple & Pilton this Saturday.
Previously winless Kents’ total of 259 for nine was anchored by Paul Tatteron’s 91.
Tatterton and Steve Reed (37) put up 102 for the fifth wicket with Jeremy Turner (22) and Scott Chappell (25) chipping in.
Dhanuja Haturusingha (4-33) led the Hydon bowling effort. Skipper Oz Besley (3-88) admitted later he probably stayed on too long.
Hydon were all out for 137 on reply – Andrew Chave (4-33) and Neil Farley (3-45) doing most of the damage.
Heflin Wood made (34) and Haturusingha (29), but there wasn’t a lot from the rest.
FILLEIGH were brought down to earth after their runaway win over Kentisbeare when they ran into promotion hopefuls Uplyme.
Adam Caddy top scored with 51 and Steve Batey hit 45 not out in an Uplyme total of 207 for six.
Mark Prideaux (31) was the only batsman to make much impression for Filleigh, who were all out for 105 and lost by 102 runs.
