Williams breaks divisional record with 210 not out

HEATHCOAT 2nd XI handed out one of the all-time hidings in the Devon League when they hammered Plymouth 3rd XI by 320 runs.

Justin Williams (pictured) slammed 210 not out for Heathcoat in a total of 412 for two – breaking two league records along the way.

Budleigh Salterton’s Lloyd White held the individual scoring record for the A Division 2nd Xi with 209 set against South Devon in 2010.

Torquay held the record for the highest score in the division for their 369 all out against Plymouth in 2002.

It is the second week running a Heathcoat 2nd XI batsman has made a double century in a league game.

Chris Small made 208 against Plymstock in the previous game.

Williams went in after 12 overs and was still there 33 overs later. He belted five sixes and 39 fours.

Plymouth were bowled out for 92 in reply.

James Davies, the Heathcoat captain, said there are several explanations for the run fest.

He added: “I think it is a case of everyone enjoying their cricket again after a poor 2014.

“There is a great team spirit and everyone is confident and in form.

“There is a friendly rivalry between all the guys to score more runs and take more wickets than each other..”

On the record-breaking performance against Plymouth, Davies said: “We got off to a good start and Justin survived a couple of dropped catches before reaching 20.

“At drinks we were targeting 300, however Justin and Will Thompson played fantastically and got us there with overs to spare.

‘We were able to play a shot a ball and see just how many we could make.

“It should make first team selection interesting this week….”

Sam Knapman, the Plymouth captain, said dropped catches cost the side dearly.

“We dropped Williams on 7, again on 15 and twice in the 60s,” said Knapman.

“Had we taken any of those catches it would have been a different game.”
