Plymstock send Chudleigh spinning to defeat

PLYMSTOCK had an early finish at Chudleigh where they shot the home side out for 101 and raced to a seven-wicket win.

Chudleigh laboured to 28 for three, managed a stand of 21 for the fourth wicket between Matt Heather (20) and Rob Clarke (15) then fell apart.

Their last five wickets went for just 20 runs as spinners George Barnicott (3-13) and Ian Whalley (3-26) twirled through them.

Although Plymstock lost opener Jason Williams for 14, Chudleigh were unable to press further.

Skipper Scott Mansfield went on 92, ending a stand of 51 with Dom Wood.

Opener Wood batted through for an unbeaten 53 to wrap up victory with more than 22 overs to spare.

Mansfield said Plymstock got stuck in when they fielded and built their match-winning momentum then.

“It was probably the best opening 18 overs we've had this season,” said Mansfield.

“Dom Wood dived full length at cover before setting himself and running-out Chudleigh skipper Ed Foreman with a direct hit.

“Ian Whalley got plenty of turn and George Barnicott yet again picked up wickets.

“Batting, we had two good partnerships, Dom and Jason put on 41 followed by 51 between myself and Dom.

“Although a shame not to pick up the full 20 points, I would have snapped at the thought of 19 prior to the game.

“Bradley Sercombe, a young left-arm spinner, bowled well towards the end of the innings for Chudleigh, finishing with two for 11 off five.

Plymstock may be seventh in a table of 10, but points wise they are only 18 behind leaders Shobrooke Park.

“The latest results seemed to go in our favour as the top four all lost which brings everyone back within a handful of points at the half way stage,” said Mansfield.

“So all to play for going into the second half.”
