BOVEY Tracey 2nd XI are heading to the Aaron Printers Cup final after beating Abbotskerswell by 17 runs in the second semi-final
Babbacombe were already through having disposed of Barton in the first semi-final at Abbotskerswell.
Bovey will be joining Babbacombe after their win over Abbots at Torquay Recreation Ground.
High scoring it wasn’t but absorbing it most certainly was.
Bovey totalled 118 for five in their 20 overs – Dom Whitlock top scoring on 30 not out.
Opener and captain Jeremy Christophers made 22 at the top of the order, but bowlers were on top as Bovey struggled to 59 for five in the 14th over.
Connor Adams (1-10) and Matt Beasant (2-11) bowled particularly mean four-over spells
A stand of 59 unbroken between Whitlock and George Pitman (25no) got Bovey close to their minimum total target of 120.
Whitlock only faced 18 balls for hits 20 while Pitman got his 25 off 23 deliveries.
One big over for Bovey was the 16th, bowled by Charlie Hill, from which 14 runs were scored.
Abbots started brightly through Charlie Mitchell (16) and Dylan Nel (18) – then lost three wickets on 35 to Mark Gribble (3-20) and Christophers (1-13).
What looked like a turning point in the game was the introduction of Bovey spinner Chris Yabsley, who took three wickets for seven runs in seven balls - and four in a row for 10 runs in total – to damage Abbots’ middle order.
At 76 for seven it looked all over for Abbots, but there was another twist or two yet.
Codd, Christophers and Pitman all bowled expensive overs – James McMurray (18) taking advantage - and Abbots were back in at 100 for seven with three overs to go.
McMurray’s departure – caught at mid-wicket trying to smash Mark Gribble into the members’ enclosure – was the beginning of the end for Abbots.
Their last three wickets went for one run – the dismissals including a spectacular run-out by Mark Taylor with a huge throw from the boundary that was too accurate for Elliot Adams.
The final is at South Devon CC, Newton Abbot on Wednesday, July 8 at 6pm.
