Abbots ask for minute's silence + Jordan goes up order

ABBOTSKERSWELL will ask Ivybridge to join them for a minute’s silence prior to the game at Two Mile Oak..

Abbots players and officials were saddened to learn this week of the death of life member Jim Coffey.

Coffey played for the club for many years and his claim to fame was a hat-trick in the club’s 1973 village cup regional final against Troon, the eventual winners.

The hat-trick came from the first three balls he bowled!

“That hat-trick provided me with my first local cricketing memory,” said current chairman Paul Mitchell.

“Jim was a fantastic supporter of Abbotskerswell cricket and was the man who made the move to the club’s current ground at Two Mile Oak happen.

“The land was owned by Jims in-laws and I believe he brokered a very good deal.

“A lovely man who will be missed by us all.”

The club will mark Jim’s death with all three teams observing a minute’s silence and wearing black armbands.

The club flag will be flown at half-mast all week.

Back in the present day Charlie Mitchell will take the gloves from unavailable Gareth Penrice.

Alex Birt is in to replace Charlie Garrett at three.

Elliott Adams, a Devon under-14, comes in for his debut after performing well all season in all competitions.

Ivybridge are unchanged after back-to-back wins over Ipplepen and Braunton.

“After two successive wins we feel our season has come to life at last,” said skipper Gareth Andrews.

PLYMSTOCK have one forced change for the trip to joint leaders Chudleigh.

Last week’s run getter josh Hocken is unavailable de to work commitments so in comes all-rounder Morgan Parkinson

Last week Plymstock learned that all-rounder jack Horton’s fractured ankle needs at least a month of rest before he plays again.

It is s a big loss, but saying that it gives the opportunity to someone else to show what they can do,” said skipper Scott Mansfield.

“Doing that so far is Sebastian Jordan, whose batting has really come on and after a run of scores it looks a good time to see what he can do up the order.”

Skipper Ed Foreman and Jack Beer are back in the Chudleigh side.

“I'm hoping our recent form continues and we stay around the top of the table,” said Foreman.

“We are still in the top half which is where we want to be.

“Plymstock will be a good side and I expect a tough game.

“If we continue to bowl like we have been then we have a good chance of getting a win.”

AXMINSTER captain Paul Miller could be excused for losing his musical ear after seeing three players drop pout to go to the Glastonbury Festival.

Both Larcombe brothers and Nick Taylor are off to the party while Dan Fuzzard is out due to an injury he picked up in last game against Plymstock

Fuzzard might be able to play 2nd Xi as a batter.

Ben Fuzzard comes in and Dave Murnane is back from London so goes straight in.

Alan Ostler keeps his place and Axminster are waiting to hear from Michael Wakley about his availability.

All that chopping and changing isn’t ideal when the opposition are joint leaders Ipplepen and your team is one off the bottom.

“The game is going to be hard but as result have shown anybody can beat anybody on a given day,” said Miller.

“Our bowling, which was very good at the start, has dropped a couple of levels in the last two weeks.

“We need to get back to how bowled at the start of the season, bowling good areas for the whole over instead of three good balls and trying to bowl three magic balls every over.

“The batters just need a bit of luck to boost the confidence and a couple of scores but the lads are positive we can get ourselves out of trouble.”

ANDREW Codling replaces absentee Phil Anning for joint leaders Shobrooke Park in the derby date with bottom side Thorverton.

“We know Thorverton will be up for this game,” said skipper Chris Simpson.

“Being a local derby, it’s a danger game for us.

“They will be desperate for the points, if we keep playing the way we have we'll  be in with a chance.”

Thorverton have keeper-batsman Harry Choules back in and left-arm pace bowler Gill Crouch in for his first game of the season.

“We have a stronger side this week and should remain stronger for the second half of the season,” said skipper Graham White.

Elsewhere in the B Division, South Devon make the long trek to Braunton.
