Tavvy own worst enemies says skipper

TAVISTOCK skipper Shaun Daymond said his side only had themselves to blame for the eight-wicket pasting handed out at Barton.
Jay Stevens (30), Daymond (29) and Shaun Cleave (21) were the only batters to reach double figures as the Moorlanders were bowled out for 142 with more than 10 overs to go.
Having been 70 for two they could and arguably should have done better.
Tavvy dismissed Steve Lewis in the first over, but that was almost as good as it got.
One Barton batsman retired injured, leaving Scott Bellamy and Tom Drake to kill the game.
“We didn't bat our overs - and most of our wickets were thrown away,” fumed Daymond.
“We got ourselves in a good position to put a decent score on the board, but 142 wasn't enough.
“The way we bowled I don't think 240 would of been enough!
“It's the first time we haven't turned up with the ball in hand, so best to forget Saturday and move on.”
When Jonty Newton was third out at 70 to Aqeel Ahmed (3-31), Tavistock went into a spin.
Daymond, Jamie Stephens and Aaron Churchill all followed as 70 for two became 82 for six.
Cleave and Stevens put on 39 with Stevens wringing what runs he could out of the tail-enders.
Spin was Tavvy’s undoing with Ahmed and Stuart Bowker (3-25) doing the damage.
Tavvy tails were up when Lewis was caught behind third ball, but Mark Gilmour and Scott Bellamysoon brought them down to earth.
Gilmour had just hit Stephen’s for six when he went for another big wind-up shot and strained his side in the process. He had to leave the field.
Tom Drake (53no) joined Bellamy (27no) at 64 and took Barton home without further mishap.

Stand-in captain Andy Hele, deputising for the absent Adam Parker, said it was one of those days when most of the things he tried came off.

“The seamers – Holmes and Gilmour – took early wickets and when the spinners got on it wasn’t long before they got wickets too,” said the former Devon keeper-batter.

“The business with Mark Gilmour getting hit was unfortunate, but luckily that didn’t hurt us.

“Tom Drake is in the form of his life right now – three 50s in as many games – and we proved we don’t have to have Shaun Needham opening up.

“Shaun has been agitating to go into the middle order and if we carry on like this he will get his wish.”

Barton are away to Cornwood this Saturday.
