SIDMOUTH wasted no time getting back on track in the Premier Division by handing out a 129-run beating to relegation worriers Exeter.
Opener Matt Cooke (pictured) led the way with 97 – having been there two hours and seven minutes he should have made a century – as Sidmouth totted up 307 for eight.
It was a pretty impressive display by the Sidmouth batting with the first eight all making at least 20, apart from Aussie import Jake Fawcett (12).
Exeter lost four wickets reaching 59 and found new Kiwi one-day cap Andy Mathieson almost unplayable.
Mathieson, called away from Sidmouth for two weeks to join the New Zealand squad, bowled 8.5 overs for 10 runs.
Miles Lenygon and Alec Bosomworth put on 53 for the fifth wicket, but after Bosomworth was caught behind off Liam Lewis, Exeter lost wicket steadily to 178 all out.
For Sidmouth it was an emphatic bounceback after their defeat by leaders North Devon, who are making a sustained bid to snatch the Premier crown away from the Fortfield this season.
It was a double-doomer for Exeter, who not only lost but drop into the bottom two as a consequence. Plymouth’s win over Heathcoat moves them ahead of Exeter by nine points.
Cooke was the anchorman as Sidmouth got to 202 for four, putting on 89 with Lewis (33), 77 with Harvey Sargent (24 and 26 with Fawcett.
Tom Lammonby (3-50) accounted for Sargent and Fawcett before Andy Mead cleaned up Cooke with a ton in sight.
The runs kept on coming though with Pete Randerson (35) adding 26 with Anthony Griffiths (21). Bess (25) and Dan Powell (22) topped things up at the end.
Exeter’s bowing figures weren’t great. Skipper Lenygon (0-41) was the only one to go for less than five an over.
Exeter, who had to plunder the 2nd XI to get a side out due to availability issues, simply didn’t have anyone in the Cooke anchorman role.
When Bosomworth joined Lenygon at 59 for four – Bess (4-23) doing most of the damage – the best knock had been Mike Wilkinson’s 22.
Lenygon (51) and Bosomworth (31 put on 53 which made the scoreline more respectable.
Charlie Miles (4-48) backed up Lewis after the partnership ended and it was downhill then to 178 all out.
Robin Fern (21) and Pete Hensor (11) put on 32 for the ninth wicket, Exeter’s second-best partnership of the game.
