Sandford skipper targets fourth-placed finish

CHARLIE Fitzroy and Prince Masvuare both hit half centuries as Sandford cruised to a seven-wicket win over Barton.

Opener Fitzroy, who signed from Chagford early in the season, played the anchorman role as Sandford chased Barton’s 210 for nine.

Russ Discombe (21) and Fitzroy put on 89 for the first wicket in a stand that ended in Discombe going lbw to Barton captain Adam Parker.

Masvuare and Fitzoy added another 71 for the second wicket as the target was chipped away.

Kyle Lardner (2-37) bowled Fitroy for 66 scored off 118 balls with the score on 160.

The same bowler had Masvuare caught behind seven runs later for 52 off 48 deliveries.

Sandford were on the home straight by now and Ryan Glass (36no) partnered  by Adrian Small (12no) saw them home with more than five overs to spare.

When Barton batted their top scorer was opener Simon Bellamy with a super-patient 57 scored in 12 minutes less than three hours.

Bellamy played the anchorman role for his side, batting until the 45th over when he was eighth out on 185.

Along the way Bellamy shared stands of 36 with Andy Hele (26), 28 with Adrian Hewings (12) and lots of 20-plus partnerships with Steve Lewis, Aqeel Ahmed, Tom Porter and Martin Lipton, whose 23 not out was the next best score.

Wickets-wise there were two each for Ben Clement (2-48) and Masvuare (2-29).

Meanest of the bowlers were skipper Jamie Palmer and Brian Leach, who were consistently below three an over.

Skipper Palmer said it was a ‘clinical’ performance in both parts of the game.

“It was good to bowl first with the ball nipping around,” said Palmer.

“Then we had a solid run chase with no real scares.”

Palmer still has his eyes on finishing fourth and feels it can be done.

“We are 12 points behind fourth place with two games left,” said Palmer.

“I will be looking for two victories to end the season on a positive note.”
