Paceman Whitlock heading for Bovey Tracey

QUICK bowler Hugo Whitlock is on his way to Bovey Tracey next season to test himself in the Premier Division.

Whitlock, who is 19 this year, started off in the youth teams at non-league Harberton before switching to Abbotskerswell.

At 15 he was opening the bowling in Abbotskerswell’s 1st XI and already being marked down as one to watch.

Abbots have suffered two successive relegations and will be competing in the C Division West next season.

Whitlock stayed with Abbots last summer after relegation from the A Division, but after taking 36 wickets at 10.64 is off to Bovey.

Only Ivybidge professional Jeewan deSilva took more wickets last season at a better average – and he went for more runs per over.

Whitlock (right) is currently in Australia playing First Grade cricket in Victoria for Hallora CC in the Warragul Association competition.

In the two-day format of the game he has taken 12 wickets at around 20 runs each, operating with the new ball.

New skipper Sam Hickinbotom expects Whitlock to do the same job at Bovey Tracey.

“When we played against Hugo last year we were impressed by him,” said Hickinbottom.

“He is taking the new ball in Australia, that is what he is used to and prefers and that is our plan for him.”

ABBOTSKERSWELL have made two close-season signings as they look to bounce straight back into the B Division at the first attempt.

Keeper-batter Chris Sleep, who started last season with Brixham and finished it at Dartington & Totnes, has signed on the dotted line.

Sleep is a qualified umpire too so Abbots should be the best informed team in the division.

Left-arm medium-pace bowler Brett Williams – he bats left-handed as well – will be coming over from Australia as the overseas player.

Ryan Williams – Brett’s brother – was Abbots’ overseas player in 2013. He scored 541 runs and took 26 wickets, so much will be expected of Ryan.
