Friends paddling to Weymouth in memory of Ryan Walker

TWO friends of tragic cricketer Ryan Walker (above) are devoting the Easter Bank Holiday to raising money for a charity close to their hearts by paddling from Seaton to Weymouth in a kayak.

Ryan, an all-round sportsman who played cricket for Seaton and Axminster and football for Seaton Town, died suddenly in July 2014.

The 24-year-old, who attended Axe Valley Community College before earning a sports degree at Southampton University, died after suffering a massive asthma attack.

Joel Seward, a former cricket team-mate at Axminster, played with Ryan for the best part of 10 years.

Joel and partner Helen Derry (right) are hoping to raise around £2,000 for Asthma UK from their sponsored paddle across Lyme Bay.

Helen, a teacher, and building trade worker Ryan, have been training hard for their Easter adventure in a two-person kayak.

“Both of us did a lot of sea kayaking last summer and since then have been training indoors most days on the rowing machine,” said 26-year-old Joel.

“It works out to be around 37 miles from Seaton to Weymouth. Hopefully we can raise plenty of money for a important charity with meaning to Ryan.”

Joel and Helen, who live in Colyford, are hoping Ryan’s friends in the sporting world will back their kayak challenge.

Ryan was a hugely popular figure on the East Devon sports scene with team-mates and rivals alike.

St Mary’s Parish Church in Axminster was packed to capacity for Ryan’s funeral.

Typical of the tributes paid to Ryan after he died was one from Seaton1st XI captain Ben Morgan.

“He just loved cricket and everything about it – the coaching, the playing and the social side,” said Morgan.

“Ryan was the sort of person who got on with everyone. I never heard a bad word said about him.”
