TAVISTOCK batsman Rhys Davies has been invited to play for Essex against Somerset in a Second Eleven Trophy game this week.

Davies, who has made more than 300 runs for Devon in the Minor Counties Championship this season, has been attracting the attention of the First Class counties.

MCC Young Cricketers selected Davies to play against Leicestershire 2nd XI last month, but the game was ruined by bad weather.

“I had my pads on and was next in when it started raining and we didn’t get back out again,” said Davies.

Somerset have looked at Davies in the past, but a surplus of keeper-batsmen at Taunton mean they haven’t shown that much interest recently.

“I have had some time in the academy at Taunton, but nothing since last year,” said Davies.

The game against Somerset is on Wednesday at Taunton Vale CC. The Somerset side is likely to include Devon contingent Dom Bess, James Burke, Lewis Gregory and Adam Dibble.
