A Division - Plympton rely on favours

BARTON are heading for a mid-table finish in the A Division, which will represent mission accomplished for skipper Adam Parker.

Parker led Barton back into the A Division this season and his first priority was staying there.

Unlike Hatherleigh, who went up with Barton, the Cricketfield Road side have not been worrying about going down for most of the season.

It’s Braunton at home for Barton tomorrow in a game with nothing on it for either side. Barton are safe while Braunton are going down.

What Parker is trying to avoid is a sense of going through the motions.

“I am looking to finish the season on a high and use it for a stepping stone into next season,” said Parker.

“It is important that we don't let the season drift off....”

PAIGNTON won’t be going up this season but look like having a say in who will as they face Plympton at Queens Park.

Plympton are involved in a fight to the finish with second-placed Sandford for the runners-up slot behind champs in waiting Heathcoat.

It’s High Noon at Harewood House next Saturday in the final round of fixtures, when Plympton host Sandford.

Rain ruined the game when the sides met earlier in the season – and hit Plympton again last Saturday when they were called off against Braunton.

As Sandford were playing Heathcoat and that was rained off too, Plympton captain Jez Williams feels the weather has done his team few favours this term.

“Last weekend being rained off was a big blow for us,” said Williams.

“We could have potentially picked up a few points at Braunton whilst there would have been a result between Sandford and Heathcoat, so there was a possibility we could have closed the gap further.

“Now things are out of our hands and we need to rely on the top two slipping up.

“All we can do is concentrate on putting in a good performance against a very good Paignton side and what will be will be.”

Alex Carr and brother James Carr unavailable so in come Christian Bunney and Matt Gregory.

BRIXHAM can do Plympton a favour by winning at Sandford, however they will be without skipper Richard Ward who is at a wedding.

IT’S a big weekend for Abbotskerswell in their efforts to stay clear of the second relegation place.

Abbots head for leaders Abbotskerswell looking for whatever they can get!

For every little is going to help Richard Acton’s side out of a tight situation.

Braunton are gonners but it’s wide open between Plymstock (129pts), Hatherleigh (137) and Abbots (141) who goes with the Kelseymen.

To spice it up further Hatherleigh are at home to Plymstock tomorrow – and Acton probably won’t be too upset if that turns out to be a home win!

A Plymstock victory could leave Abbots with a lot to do against Barton in the final round of fixtures.

“Obviously we head to Heathcoat looking for a win, but picking up as many points as we can is vital,” said Acton.

“If we can do that then survival will be in our own hands heading into the last game.

“Saturday is a big game for us. We have a full-strength team which is great at this time of the season.”

Abbots did beat Heathcoat first time round, a result their captain Sam Smith hasn’t forgotten.

“We know Abbots have threats throughout their team and experienced that when we lost at theirs nine weeks ago,” said Smith.

“However, we have been playing better cricket over the second half of the season and i feel we have a well balanced side for Saturday.

Former Somerset fast bowler Steffan Jones and Jack Menheneott return to strengthen the bowling attack.

IT’S all or nothing for Plymstock against Hatherleigh after they were rained off against Brixham.

“Rain ruined our chance of gaining ground on the other A Division strugglers last Saturday, so the season pretty much boils down to tomorrow’s game,” said senior player George Barnicott.

“We need 20 points against Hatherleigh and abbotskerswell to lose as well.

“Hatherleigh have Braunton on the last day of the season so we've got to hope Brraunton can pull something out the bag and that Abbots slip up to Barton.

“We've got ourselves in a position where we have to rely on other results and still get maximum points. Fingers crossed!”
