Premier previews - Win or bust for Bovey

TORQUAY can banish the threat of relegation from the Premier Division once and for all by beating Bradninch on the Recreation Ground tomorrow.

Bottom side Budleigh Salterton appear doomed to the drop – irrespective of what they do against Exeter tomorrow or Sidmouth on the final day of the season.

Bradninch (139pts), Cornwood (157) and Torquay (158) are all scrapping to avoid going down as the second-bottom club.

Cornwood will be looking for points from the derby clash with Plymouth at Mount Wise in their battle for survival – a game which looks too close to call.

Torquay already have a sizeable lead over Bradninch and one more win will put them safe with a game to go.

Matt Thompson, Torquay’s vice-captain who is back with his club side after scoring back-to-back tons for Devon in against Oxfordshire, reckons it might not be a great spectacle with so much at stake.

“It is by far the biggest game of the season both for us and Bradninch,” said Thompson.

“Bradninch will be scrapping for every run and every point so we are under no illusions as to what our job is.

“Let’s not forget that in Paul Nott they have one of the Premier Division’s leading wicket takers not to mention what Jackson Thompson brings to the table.

“We have to be intelligent in everything we do, make sure we do the basics right and enjoy the challenge of playing for our right to be in this division.

“If we do those things, I am confident we will end up with the right result.”

Matt Hunt plays despite not being 100 per cent fit to bolster the bating as Mickey Wilkinson is unavailable.

BOVEY Tracey captain Peter Bradley is clinging to the hope his side can make a run up the blindside to pinch the Premier Division title.

Exmouth are 12 points clear of Bovey at the top of the table with Sidmouth a further seven points behind in third.

Bovey entertain Sidmouth tomorrow in a game they have to win to stay in the hunt. Sidmouth are in exactly the same position.

Said Bradley: “The only way we can win the league is to win both our remaining games – and even that might not be enough.

“It’s out of our hands to a certain extent as we need Exmouth to lose at least one of their last two.

“Exmouth have got North Devon tomorrow and when the have all their stars in – Tom Allin, Glenn Querl and Craig Overton – they should beat most sides in our division.

“All we can do is beat Sidmouth – not easy as they are a fine side – and hope we get to the last round of games in with a chance.”

Charlie Hill comes back into the starting side for James Fulner in the only change of personnel.

EXMOUTH captain Richard Baggs is hoping Sidmouth can do his side a favour by beating Bovey and getting it down to a two-horse race for the title.

“We were due to play Bovey last Saturday and that was our chance to kill them off, but it rained,” said Baggs.

“Ultimately we should be concentrating on our own games from now on as if we win both no one is going to catch us.

“In an ideal world though it wouldn’t do us any harm if Sidmouth beat Bovey, just so long as we beat North Devon.

“What we don’t want is to lose to North Devon and for Bovey to win as that’s going to put us neck-and-neck with a game to go.

“And while you can’t do the maths exactly before the games are played, if we lost and Sidmouth won all three of us could be within six or seven points.

“The best way we can avoid that is by beating North Devon as I don’t want to go to Cornwood on the last day of the season wanting too many points, especially if they need a win to stay up.”

AFTER the disappointment of losing to Sidmouth by one wicket in the Devon Cup semi-finals, Plymouth are looking to take out their frustrations on Cornwood.

Plymouth aren’t going anywhere this season, but Cornwood are still playing to dodge the drop.

Matt Hooper, the Plymouth skipper, doesn’t intend doing the Corns any favours.

“We can't wait for the match,” said Hooper.

“It was rained off earlier in the season at their place, so we will want to put one over them.

“They really need to win but with it being a derby match so do we.

“We are looking to bounce back from that defeat by Sidmouth and show we are still the number one side in Plymouth.

“We would like to improve our final league position as well with a couple of wins in the final two matches.

“I am anticipating a good contest but I expect us to win.”

Plymouth start with the same side that lost to Sidmouth.
