Star-studded Somerset on way to Barton

SEE Somerset’s stars for free!  That’s one of the attractions of the Arul Suppiah benefit game at Barton next month.

Suppiah, who was forced to retire midway through the season due to injury problems, is taking a Somerset XI to Cricketfield Road on Monday, September 16 for a T20 match.

Somerset have thousands of supporters in Devon and this is a rare chance to see the star-studded  team in action on their doorstep.

The current Somerset side is packed with past and present England internationals, including Marcus Trescothick, Craig Kieswetter, Nick Compton, Jos Buttler and Devon favourite Jamie Overton.

Overton, called up this week into the England one-day squad to face Ireland and Australia, learned his cricket in Devon with club side North Devon and the Devon Cricket Board youth set up.

Suppiah is no stranger to Devon either, having played for Seaton and Exmouth earlier in his career. The former University of Exeter student also played for Devon in the Minor Counties Championship, scoring a double hundred against Dorset.

The match starts at 4.30pm and Barton are pulling out all the stops to make it a success.

The bar will be open and club members are organising a barbecue, other hot and cold food and a raffle.

There is no shortage of parking on the ground – and that’s free as well!

All enquiries about the match should be made to austinlaine@btinternet.com.
