LEWDOWN batsman Marco Marias has three records in the bag already and three more in sight as the Devon League season comes to a close.
Marias thumped 106 against Stoke Gabriel last Saturday, reaching his seventh league century of the season.
Seven tons in a B Division season is an individual record as the previous best was six by Brixham’s Andy Pugh back in 1990 – and that was in a 22-game season rather than the 18 played now.
Marias already has the record for the highest score by a B Division batsman having scored an unbeaten 200 against Alphington last month. No one had reached a double ton before.
The young South African with a handful of games for Border under his belt, already holds the record for the most runs scored in a B Division season. Brixham’s Martin Gleeson (1059) set that record back in 1997.
That leaves two more records for the 19-year-old to break before he flies home.
Tavistock’s Phil Stephens has the best batting average of any player in the B Division – a whopping 130.5 posted in 1993. Marias is currently averaging 129.8 with a game to go.
Eight not out would be enough to break Stephens’ record. Doing it the hard way though would break two more records.
Marais needs 144 or more if he gets out to have a better average than Stephens, who only scored 523 runs setting his record.
The other records to go then would be the highest run aggregate and the greatest number of runs in a season in any division.
Both records are held by Pugh, who hit seven tons on his way to an aggregate of 1400 runs for Brixham during the 1994 A Division campaign,
Lewdown face Ivybridge tomorrow looking for a win and four more points than Chudleigh get at Barnstaple & Pilton to seal the B Division title.
Chudleigh will only miss out on promotion if they lose at B&P and Ivybridge win against Lewdown.
Down in the basement there is a fight for survival going on between Stoke Gabriel and Alphington to avoid going down with winless South Devon.
Stoke – who are level on points with Alphington – entertain South Devon and it is hard to see them losing to team which didn’t win a game last season either!
Stuart Shaw, the Alphington captain, said he it was fingers crossed time for his men.
“The odds are now stacked against us,|” said Shaw. “We should have beaten Barnstaple last week, which would of put us in pole position.
“The way South Devon has been playing it looks like all Stoke have to do is turn up and walk away with the points.”
“We only have ourselves to blame for our league position and I am sure we will learn from our mistakes,
“I still believe in all my players and know we will come back next season stronger from our experiences which ever Division we play in.”
