Hatherleigh down on games drawn

Premier 2nd XI

PAIGNTON 2nd XI avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth in a three-way jam at the bottom of the table with Hatherleigh and Plympton.

While Budleigh Salterton could do little to save themselves from going down, Paignton, Hatherleigh, Cornwood and Plympton were scrapping like ferrets in a sack not to go with them.

Plympton beat Exeter by 95 runs to reach 189 points, which Paignton got on after their game at Plymouth was stopped by bad light when it could have gone either way.

The big game was the meeting between Cornwood and Hatherleigh, which the latter lost by 26 runs.

Cornwood did enough to make it to 190 points, which took them out of the equation.

Paignton had won six games, one more than Hatherleigh or Plympton, so winning draws were the determining factor.

Plympton had two to Hatherleigh’s one and so held on for another season.

“It was a bit too close for comfort, but the important thing is we survived and our best young players will only benefit from exposure to Premier 2nd XI cricket next season,” said Paignton skipper Tim Ward.

Plymouth – six for three at one stage – reached 140 all out thanks to 67 from Rob Button. George Benton (5-37) rediscovered his bowling form after being dropped from the 1st XI and there were wickets for veterans Terry Farkins (2-50) and Mike Pedley (3-25).

Mark Smith made 49 and Jason Woodcock 26 as Paignton reached 128 for eight with eight overs to go.

Hatherleigh were all out for 161 against Cornwood – Michael Jones top scoring with 40.

Matt Skeemer and M Rose took three wickets each for Cornwood.

Mark Brock (3-43) and Charlie Neilson (3-1) bowled Cornwood out for 135, with assistance from Ross Cherrington (2-35) and Rob Cockwill (2-33).

The Corns had collapsed to 75 for eight – Chris Parker making 41 – and despite a rearguard action from Henry Bennett (30) and Skeemer (21) they could not hold on.

Bovey Tracey eased to a six-wicket win over visiting Sidmouth, who were bowled out for 177 by Sam Thomas (4-77), James Mason (2-36) and Charlie Carter (2-2) at the end.

Sidmouth’s Matt Hewer made 44 against his old club and Will Sobczak made 38 in an opening stand of 87.

Bovey’s run chase was led by Simon Newton (44) and Ed Woolcott (39), then finished off by Phil Arnold (39no) and James Fulner (24no).

North Devon finished on a high when they routed Budleigh Salterton by 49 runs

Richard Screech hit a top score of 68 for North Devon and Rob Hearne chipped in with 44 towards a total of 185 all out.

Tim Cooke’s six for 51 haul sent Budleigh crashing to 136 all out with Ian Taylor stranded on 69 not out while wickets tumbled at the other end.

Plympton racked up 210 for seven against Exeter with Alex Carr (55) and Callum Cload (38no) leading the way.

Tscehpo Legodi (3-47) had the best of the bowling figures for Exeter, who were embarrassingly all out for 115 in reply.

Graham White was run out in a mix-up over calls with skipper Richard Nelsey. Matt Williamson chipped in with 23, but that was it as Dan Vince (5-34) and Hallam Kerton (3-18) ran through the rest of the batting.
