D Division: Pens on up as Mason stars

D DIVISION

IPPLEPEN secured C Division cricket next season with a one-wicket win over visiting Countess Wear.

Anthony Mason was the star of the show for the champions.  The Kiwi all-rounder claimed 5-25 as Countess Wear were restricted to 145-8 in which Mark Davey top scored with 39.

Mason then batted at number six and hit an unbeaten 39, the side’s top score, to help the hosts limp over the line at 148-9. Sam DeFriend hit a priceless 36 for the hosts whilst Kav Diaz (5-29) was the principle bowler for Countess Wear.

Ottery St Mary continues to seemingly do their best to avoid promotion – it is now one win in eight - after they were beaten by six wickets at Plymouth CS&R.

The Otters do still have a 15 point cushion over third placed Feniton.

Dan Windsor was the architect in chief of the Otters downfall with 4-8 as the East Devon side were bowled out for 118.

Brian Gaylard then hit 38 to lead the hosts to a six-wicket win.

Feniton closed to within 15 points of a D Division promotion place with three games, and sixty points, still to play for after they were nine-run winners at Yelverton.

The two sides had started the day as the best of the rest behind the top two, so it was a winner-takes-all contest to stay in the promotion picture.

Skipper Mark Kingdon top scored with 39 and there was splendid 34 from Ben Allen who had been promoted out of the Acland Park 2nd XI. Alex Frankpitt chipped in with 30 and Graham Tucker scored 30 in a total of 168 all out. Kevin Treweeks  claimed 5-14 for the hosts who were then always up with the run-chase, but losing wickets on a regular basis.

Will Chapman top scored with 49 and Dan Cooper hit 30 whilst Russ Witton claimed 5-42, the last of them in the final over thanks to a smart catch from Rob Pfeiffer that sealed victory for Kingdon’s men.

Norman Bedford took 3-44 and there was a super 12-over spell delivered by Dave Clarke – another promoted from the 2nd XI - who finished with the most economical figures of 1-28.

The big game at the foot of the D Division saw Whitchurch haul themselves out of the bottom two for the first time since May with a six-wicket win over Halberton & Sampford Peverell side, who are now in the bottom two.

Tom Sambrook (49) and John Chilcott (39) top scored in an offering of 179-6.

Josh Meadows claimed 3-38 for the hosts who were then led to victory by Evan Smith (52) and a knock of 42 from skipper Richard Hall.

Paul Robins took 2-44 for the now troubled mid-Devon side who face a tough battle to avoid slipping back into the E Division.

Scott Tremaine (52) and Mark Fogerty (41) scored the runs as bottom side Bridestowe were restricted to 168-7, passed for the loss of four wickets by visiting Whimple.
