NORTH DEVON LEAGUE – WEEK 20
DIVISION ONE
THE First Division title race is set to go right down to the wire after leaders Bideford suffered a fourth defeat of the season, beaten by a single wicket in a thrilling contest at North Devon.
Despite the defeat, Bideford remain in pole position but they can not afford any more slip ups in their remaining two games, for, if they do have another mishap, then North Devon, Hatherleigh and Filleigh, all of whom have also lost four games this term, would be able to snatch the top honour.
Matt Allin struck a superb 110 as Bideford closed on 225-9. At 172-9 the North Devon reply was in grave trouble but Luke Ansell joined brother Tom at the wicket and the pair took the Instow men to a thrilling last ball victory, achieved with Tom hitting the final ball of the game for four! Tom finished unbeaten on 61 and Luke was not out 9. Bideford’s last two games see them host Newton Tracey on September 4 and Braunton on September 11. North Devon’s final two games are at Sandford on September 4 and at Newton Tracey on September 11.
Hatherleigh’s challenge for the top honour continues after they were two wicket winners at home to Newton Tracey. Gareth Tidball served up the match winning performance for the hosts. Newton Tracey batted first and were bowled out for 166. Phil Steward (53) top scored for the visitors as Tidball claimed 3-18 and Rob Fishleigh picked up 3-28. Tidball then top scored in the run chase with 31 and there was a timely 27 from Rob Chapman. Kieran Jarrett and Simon Gear both bagged a pair of wickets for beaten Newton Tracey who are now in danger of being overhauled by Heathcoat at the foot of the table.
Heathcoat have lost as few games as anybody in the top section – four – and are paying a heavy price for the deduction of points from playing unregistered players and that keeps them at the foot of the table and in danger of dropping into the Second Division. The Knightshayes men are doing their best to stay up as emphasised by a whopping 117 run win over Braunton. Pete Randerson plundered a magnificent 130, putting on 176 for the third wicket with Justin Williams (75) whilst Chris Small also chipped in with 92 in a Heathcoat total of 355-7. That is the highest total by any side in the top flight this season.
Chris Brigden emerged from the carnage with the very respectable figures of 3-38 from eight overs. Stuart Rhodes then hit 53 in the reply but wickets fell along the way as Guy Clatworthy claimed 5-48, Dillon Penberthy took 3-42 and Hugh McDowell bagged a brace as the visitors were bowled out for 138.

DIVISION TWO
Leaders Barnstaple and Pilton won their penultimate game of the season with a 59 run home success over Shobrooke Park and that was sufficient to see them crowned champions of Division Two and they will return next season to play in the top flight.
Danny Donovan (45) and Andrew Barton (43) and Yaz Iqbal (36) hit the runs as Barum were bowled out for 235. Ben Stockton, James Bevan, Jason Barnes and Pete Steer each took two wickets for the Mid Devon men who were then bowled out for 176. Matt Blakeney top scored with 56 and Mark Shaw chipped in with 50 whilst Danny Donovan completed a fine all-round effort with 3-32.
Beaford continued their challenge but it looks as if they will have to settle for the runners-up berth after an emphatic nine wicket home win over Shebbear. The College side were playing their final game of the season and the contest ended too early for the players to retire to the Beaford Inn! Shebbear were 49-2 before collapsing to 56 all out with James Starkey the only batsman to prosper, hitting 34. Mike Lemons only sent down eleven deliveries but finished with figures of 3-0! Mark Lake picked up 2-89 and then Ali McMillan hit an unbeaten 28 as Beaford raced to an eight wicket win.
Steve Skinner top scored with 55 and Ricky Kelly hit 37 but that was as good as it got for Victoria Park, bowled out for 181 to lose by nine runs at Weare Giffard who had earlier closed on 190-7.
RESULTS

DIVISION THREE
Leaders Halberton had the day off and, with results elsewhere going in their favour, it means a win this Sunday in the Mid Devon derby at home to Sandford II, and they will be crowned champions and book a berth in the second tier next season.
Gary Abdoll (58) and Pete Whitby (49) top scored for Sandford II in their 189 all out at home to Holsworthy. James Watson, Jack Greening and Andrew Butler each bagged a brace of wickets for Holsworthy who were led to a five wicket win by a splendid knock from Darren Jenkins. Jenkins was on 98 with the scores level when he struck a shot he hoped would sail to the boundary. Unfortunately for Jenkins his effort to record a maiden century this season ended as he was caught, but it made no difference to the end result. Jack Greening chipped in with 35 for the winners who climbed to a lofty third in the table with their win.
Ben Brend (53) and Elliot Binns (33) led Bideford II to 232-8 at home to Newton Tracey. Mark Cowling took 3-33 for the visitors who were then restricted to 186-7. Jon Turner top scored with 44 whilst David Norris was the pick of the home bowlers with 2-39.
Jaz Kalsi hit 58 as Filleigh II were restricted to 184-8 at home to North Devon II. John Wainwright took 3-36 for the Instow men who were then hustled out for just 44. Mike Prideaux was the chief architect of the visitor’s downfall taking 6-9 from 7.3 overs. Such was the dominance of ball over bat that not one North Devon batsman hit more than five which was also the total added to the score for the ball hitting a helmet on the ground!
RESULTS
Sandford II 189 (G Abdul 58, P Whitby 49; J Watson 2-30, J Greening 2-35, A Butler 2-40), Holsworthy 190-5 (D Jenkins 98, J Greening 35). Holsworthy (20pts) bt Sandford (5) by 5 wkts.

DIVISION FOUR
The big surprises were at the foot of the table with the morning’s bottom two both winning! Barnstaple and Pilton II were victorious for only the third time this term, winning by three wickets in a low scoring affair at North Molton. The home side were bundled out for 83 with only Pete Davies (42) and Chris Turner (15) making any impression with the bat as Chris Boreham (3-26) and Chris Newton (3-14) claimed wickets. Newton then hit an unbeaten 20 as he and James Roe (18) led Barum to their rare success. Jack Reed did his best for the home cause taking 5-7 from his spell of nine excellent overs.
Lynton and Lynmouth II also landed a rare success, a two wicket victory at Westleigh thanks to a superb display of batting from 15-year old Lawrence May. Mark Cann hit 32 as Westleigh were bowled out for 144 with Jeremy Bingham taking 4-13 and Nick Constable picking up 2-39. Young May then took centre stage, striking an unbeaten 112 to lead Lynton and Lynmouth to a two wicket success. Tony Rea (3-24) and James Corry (2-36) snared wickets for the beaten hosts.
Callum Mallett took 4-12 and Ryan Dennis claimed 2-8 as leaders Belstone bundled out hosts Victoria Park II for 73. Tony Schiller, playing his first game of the season, top scored with 18. Phil Woods (49no) and Scott Tremain (28no) led Belstone to a ten wicket win.
