Devon start busy spell with a win

DEVON 050s got a busy spell of three games in eight days under way with a four-wicket win over Wiltshire at Corsham.

Wiltshire won the toss and elected to bat. The early overs from Graeme Wilson and Paul Nott were very tight and saw Wiltshire get off to a slow start.

The introduction of Mark Goodman brought the first wicket when he bowled the Wiltshire captain for 24. Wilson bowled all of his nine overs and despite finishing wicketless he only conceded 24 runs.

By this time the other Wiltshire opener Steve Copeland was starting to open his shoulders and was looking to increase the run rate.

The introduction of spin twins, Paul Harding and Graham Munday slowed the scoring down. Tim Cowley was bowled by Munday, Copeland was caught by Paul Harding for 54 and next ball Geoff Ramsey was bowled.

Mynott was next to go, superbly run out by Paul Nott from a direct hit.

Hendy Alleyne 42n.o. and Mark Hunt 54 built a good partnership before Hunt was stumped off the bowling of Mark Heather just before the end of the Wiltshire innings.

Graham Munday 3 for 23 from his 9 overs, with Paul Harding 0 for 25 from his nine. Wiltshire 204 for 6 wickets from 45 overs.

Devon did not get off to the best of starts to their innings, with Julian Page and Richard Tidball both dismissed cheaply.

Neil Murrin together with Mark Heather consolidated and started to put together a sound partnership. Heather departed for 22 lbw to Cowley.

Munday joined Murrin and another good partnership followed, before Munday was well caught at the second attempt by the diving Phil Jones. Munday 30.

Captain Roger Wensley came in rather later than normal as he had injured his wrist when fielding. Wensley quickly dismissed any fears about his injury and quickly set about the Wiltshire bowling.

Neil Murrin was well past his half century and a century looked on the cards, however, with 80 runs Neil skied a catch to mid-off. Paul Harding smashed a quick 21 off 13 balls and almost saw Devon home. Roger Wensley dispelled any fears his team mates may have had and together with Paul Nott steered Devon home with seven balls remaining. Wensley 38 no. Nott 5no
