Winning start for Ipplepen

IPPLEPEN made a winning start in the B Division by dispatching Braunton by 71 runs.

Jack Lewis and Sam deFriend both made half centuries as the divisional new boys raced to 245 for seven.

Lewis hit 73 and deFriend 61 in a first-wicket stand of 127 in 29 overs as the young support bowlers struggled to match the consistency of the experienced pair of opening bowlers.

The total was topped up by a quick 30 off 12 balls from Sam Wakeham and 37 off 28 by Tom Dyer.

Braunton didn’t help themselves with a dropped catch count that got into double figures.

Jon Baglow led the bowling effort with three for 29. Alfie Huxtable’s three wickets cost 73 runs.

Braunton made a 68-run hole in the deficit with runs from Rob Collier (38) and Huxtable (31) before Ash Harvey (2-36) took his first league wicket for Ipplepen

Harvey together with Keith Wakeham (2-35) pegged back the Bruanton run rate as with chip ins from Baglow (22) and Mark Mitchell (34no) the home side reached 152 for five.

Then it all went wrong for Braunton.

The last five wickets went for 31 runs as Braunton were dismissed for 183,

Ipplepen’s 20-point haul means they are top of the table, although they were the only team to actually finish.

Skipper Keith Wakeham said it was a bit early to get carried away.

“While we can be very pleased with the result, our bowling and fielding looked rusty at times, and can improve with practice,” said Wakeham.

NEIL Hancock slammed a quickfire century as South Devon totted up a batting maximum in their B Division derby at Chudleigh.

Hancock, now in his second season at South Devon, made 113 off just 97 balls in a total of 217 all out.

The former Devon captain hit 15 fours and four sixes before he was sixth out on 193.

Along the way there had been a stand of 62 with Sean Day (21), which was a warm-up for the 104-run partnership with Paul Hooper for the sixth wicket.

Hooper went on to make a run-a-ball 43.

Pick of the bowlers for Chudleigh with three for 46 was Rob Clarke.

Will Heather had two for 45, Faisal Khaliq collected two for 26.

There was no play after tea as the weather closed in.

For new South Devon captain Jon Martin it was an encouraging start to the season.

“To score 200-plus on a wet day was a good effort by the batters,” said Martin.

“It was nice to see Hanks get a century in the first game – and Paul Hooper’s 43 was pretty impressive.

“We did give away a few wickets at the end throwing the bat, but we had them in hand and were trying to get as many runs as we could before it rained.”
