B DIVISIONRICHARD Acton hit a match-winning ton for Abbotskerswell against Ottery St Mary in a game he wasn’t supposed to be playing in!
Acton was due to play for his university side, but that game was called off so he wangled a game for Abbots instead.
Chasing Ottery’s total of 183 for seven – Matt Reed (41), Rob Jackson (62) – Abbot were 85 for three with 19 overs to go.
Acton, aided by Sean Green and some indifferent fielding brought up his 50 before launching a series of sixes to the short boundary.
Acton brought up his hundred with his eighth six and assisted by Green (31no) guided the team home with one over remaining.
“ It was an excellent start for an one we will look to build on against Kingsbridge this weekend,” said skipper Guy Harrison-Roberts.
Ipplepen were on the receiving end as Sidmouth got off the mark with a four-wicket win.Pens’ skipper Simon Tapley top scored on 54 for the new boys, who were bowled out for 150 by Graham Munday (5-30).
Declan Lines hit 77 not out to see Sidmouth home.
Kingsbridge crashed to a 104-run defeat against Plymstock, who racked up 246 for four with Steve Coomer (87no), Mark Woodward (56), Rob Baker (56) all getting runs.
Although James Ellis made 53 for Kings, Ian Whally (3-28) and Woodward (3-19) rolled them over for 142.
Bideford made the long trek to Newton Abbot worthwhile by beating South Devon by five wickets.
Kevin Murphy’s 46 was as good as it got for South Devon, who were all out for 122.
The bowling damage was done by left-armer Paul Shepherd (4-32) and 16-year-old seamer Josh Atkinson, who took five for 39.
Fergus Bradbeer (34) and John Weeks (23) didn’t dwell too long knocked them off.
C DIVISION
CLYST Hydon 2nd XI scraped a one-wicket win over Shobrooke Park in a low-scoring affair.
Kev Sercombe took five for five as Shobroke were bowled out for just 70,
Shobrooke skipper Mark Goodman returned the compliment by taking five for five as well, helping to reduce Clyst to 67 for nine.
“They needed four to win and it took them about five overs to get there,” said Goodman. “It was quite a finish!”
Super veteran Richard Cavendish helped himself to an unbeaten 55 as Cornwood won by five wickets against Thorverton.
Cavendish, Devon O60s’ regular, was aided and abetted by Phil Bees (36) knocking off 168 to win;
Earlier, Bees (3-27) was among the wickets as Thors made 168 for seven – Alan Tait (41) and John Spry (36) the leading run getters.
Kingskerswell had a harsh introduction to C Division cricket as they were bowled out for 82 by Plymouth CSR and lost by four wickets.
Alex Yates (4-23) send Kerswell sliding until Kevin Jones (28no) dug in.
Chris Hurrell (2-34) and Kris Davis (2-36) gave Plymouth CSR a few anxious monents on the chase.
