B Division: Simpson asks batters for more application

SHOBROOKE skipper Chris Simpson wants to see some more application from his batters when Plymstock visit Shobrooke this Saturady.

Ipplepen beat Shobrooke by 50 runs last Saturday after making a modest 153 for nine.

“The batting was very disappointing with some loose shots, although John James toughed it out for a while,” said Simpson.

“Hopefully the boys will learn from this week and bat a lot better next week.”

“We need to bat smarter in the next game and try building some partnerships.”

Simpson highlighted in his pre-season remarks to the team Shobrook’s lack of success at home in 2014 when the only won twice.

They can expect another reminder on Saturday.

“We were poor last year at home, that has to change starting this week,” he said.

James Beavan comes in for Andrew Steer as an extra bowler.

THORVERTON intend to banish all thoughts ofr Steve Bowman when they enterain Ivybridge.

Bowman scored a hunded then took three wickets for Abbotskerswell in a 112-run defeat last time out.

Bowman went on to make 106 and with Dylan Nel making 53 as well Abbots totted up 232 for nine. Jake Choules was the leading wicket taker with three for 42.

Teenage opener Jamie Khan looked comfortable making 29 at the top for Thorverton, which was as good as it got;

Other than a brace of 13s for Denford and skipper Graham White, the batting largely failed.

Bowman took three for 24 and Matt Beasant three for 17 as Thors were dismissed for 120.

“We are writing off last week’s loss off as a blip and looking very positively towards Saturday,” said Thors’ skipper Graham White.

“George Greed and Jamie Khan are unavailable, but we have regular opener Paul Fielder and left-arm spinner Nick Barton back.

“I’m delighted Nick is playing as he’s a quality bowler to bring in, but we may not get two many games out of him this year.”

Ivybridge name the same side that slipped up against Chudleigh with skipper Gareth Andrews predicting the usual close and enjoyable game against Thors.

SOUTH Devon will be without former county captain Neil Hancock for the derby date against Ipplepen at Marsh Road.

Hancock has work commitments this Saturday, which is one of only two games he will miss all season if he stays fit.

The Newton Abbot side won’t make to many changes apart from replacing Hancock after beating Axminster by six runs last time out.

Ipplepen will be without skipper Keith Wakeham, who is currently in the United States.

FORMER Somerset and Devon fast bowler Iain Bond is back in Braunton’s side for the trip to Chudleigh.

Bond bowled at Lord’s for Devon in a Minor Counties final, but these days prefers to bat.

With Matt Smith and Mark Mitchell unavailable, Bond’s availability is good news for Braunton captain Jon Baglow.

Winning at Plymstock last Saturday got Braunton going after the previous week’s setback against Ipplepen.

Said Baglow: “Generally a marked improvement from the first game.

“We bowled and fielded well, which you have to do to restrict to 112.

“I think eight wickets were either bowled, caught behind or lbw.

“To knock them off in 25 overs with two wickets down shows that we applied ourselves well.

“The two youngsters – Alfie Huxtable and Mitchell - looked comfortable in knocking them off and was great for both of them to be there to take us over the line.”

Chudleigh have lost two members of the team that beat Ivybridge, which means call-ups for Jack Beer and veteran bowler Mark Heather.

“If we play like we did last week then we will be fine,” said skipper Ed Foreman.

“This will hopefully be the first step towards the consistency I'm looking for from us.”

AXMINSTER skipper Paul Miller intends naming the same side that scared South Devon for the home match with Abbotskerswell.

“As everybody available and we South Devon so close, there will be no changes,” said Miller.

“Abbots will be a tough game they have some good players in their team - as the result against Thorverton showed.

“If we bowl and field well as a unit like last week we might be able to get a result were looking for.”
